Chapter 6 - The Unshakable Foundation

The thunderous echo of Master Chief Jack Hayes’s command—“Admiral on Deck!”—reverberated off the historic timber beams of the Magnolia Harbor Chapel, rattling the stained-glass windows and freezing the entire congregation in place.

More than two hundred battle-hardened veterans, operators, and senior defense officials moved as a single organism. In perfect, synchronized unison, every single one of them snapped crisp, immaculate hand salutes. The collective snap of fabric and rigid posture filled the sacred space with an electric, overwhelming gravity.

At the front of the altar, my father staggered backward against the polished cedar pews, his face draining of every last drop of color. His mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water, his hands trembling as he stared past the bridal party at the sea of gold and bronze ribbons standing in absolute, reverent honor of my presence.

My sister Melissa’s hands flew to her mouth, her designer veil slipping slightly down her cascading hair as she looked between her father’s horrified expression and the rigid wall of naval authority blocking every exit.

I didn't flinch. I didn't smile. I slowly raised my right hand, my fingers brushing the brim of my service cap in a sharp, flawless return salute, acknowledging the men and women who had walked through fire for our nation—and who had chosen to show up for me when my own blood tried to erase my existence.
