Chapter 8 - The Groom’s Retreat

The junior partner standing beside my sister at the altar turned a pale, sickly green, realizing the sheer magnitude of the social and professional catastrophe unfolding around him. His family’s investment firm relied heavily on government defense contracts—contracts overseen, audited, and influenced by the very senior military leadership currently standing silently in the pews.
“Mr... Mr. Bennett,” the groom stammered, grabbing my father’s shoulder to pull him back. “Sir, please. Look around you. That’s General Vance over in the third row. That’s the Director of Naval Intelligence standing by the door. Your daughter isn't just a retired officer... she’s half the Pentagon’s command network.”
My mother finally broke down, sinking heavily into the front pew and burying her face in her hands as the horrifying reality of what they had done settled into their bones. They hadn't just alienated a difficult daughter; they had publicly declared war on a four-star commander whose loyal network spanned every tier of national defense.

Melissa stared at me from the altar, tears of humiliation and fury spilling over her mascara. “You ruined my wedding! You couldn't let me have just one day where it wasn't about your stupid career!”
“This was never about my career, Melissa,” I said, stepping past my trembling father and walking slowly down the center aisle as the veterans parted like the sea to let me through. “This was about respect. Something this family forgot how to give a very long time ago.”
