Chapter 6 - The Weight of Solitude

The heavy double doors of the ballroom swung shut behind the federal agents, muffling Daniel’s frantic, sputtering denials as he was escorted out into the courtyard.

In the center of the reception hall, the glittering crystal chandeliers seemed to cast an unforgiving, sterile light over Chloe. She stood entirely alone now, the expensive sequins of her dress catching the illumination while her shoulders shook with uncontrollable sobs. The crowd of one hundred and fifty guests had retreated to the periphery, whispering behind cupped hands, their initial curiosity curdling into open disdain.

Chloe turned slowly, her tear-streaked face searching the room for a single sympathetic look, but she found only stone-cold silence.

“Luca... please,” she whimpered again, taking a fragile step toward me. “I didn't know. I swear to god I didn't know about the fraud. Daniel told me he was a successful executive... he promised me security.”

I didn't break my stride as I walked past her, my arm securely linked with Jessi’s. My daughter’s posture was radiant, her head held high in a breathtaking display of quiet triumph.

“Security isn't something you buy with stolen pension funds, Chloe,” I replied calmly, not even stopping to look back. “It’s something you build brick by brick, night after night, when you choose to stay.”

Before Chloe could collapse entirely against the wooden crate of discarded memories, venue staff in sharp vests stepped forward, flanked by Arthur Vance.

“Ma’am, you need to clear the floor,” Arthur instructed politely, his tone devoid of any warmth. “The marshals are securing the perimeter for asset seizure proceedings, and your personal vehicle in the guest lot is currently being cataloged under federal warrant.”
