Chapter 6 - The Slap That Shattered the Past

The sharp crack of skin hitting skin echoed off the cold limestone pillars of the courthouse steps, freezing the morning air dead in its tracks. My mother’s palm burned against my left cheek, the sting radiating straight down into my jaw.
For a second, the world tilted sideways. The news cameraman’s lens swung violently toward us, the red tally light blinking a greedy invitation.
"You ungrateful, malicious little bitch!" my mother shrieked, her voice cracking with performative agony as she pulled her hand back, glaring at me like I was a stranger who had just murdered her child. "That’s your brother! Your own flesh and blood sitting in a jail cell while you prance around in an expensive suit trying to ruin his life!"
I didn't cower. I didn't raise a hand to my face. I simply stood my ground, my eyes locked onto hers with a cold, terrifying stillness that made her take an involuntary half-step backward.
"If you ever touch me again," I whispered, the words carrying a razor-sharp edge that cut straight through her hysterics, "I will have you arrested for assault right beside him."
My mother stared at me, her chest heaving, the theatrical tears instantly drying up as she realized the old script no longer worked. The docile daughter who absorbed every family injustice to keep the peace was dead and buried.
"You're dead to us," she hissed, her voice trembling with venom. "Your father has already called the probate lawyer. Not a single dime of the family estate, not a stick of furniture, not a drop of inheritance will ever touch your hands. You are cut off forever."
May you like
"Good," I said, stepping past her toward the heavy glass doors of the courthouse. "Save you the paperwork."
