Chapter 8 - The Parking Lot Ambush

As I walked out of the courthouse side exit into the brisk afternoon air, a heavy hand grabbed my shoulder and spun me around with brute force.
It was my father. His face was mottled purple, the veins in his neck bulging as he loomed over me.
"Are you happy now?" he snarled, spittle flying from his lips. "Your brother is facing five years in a penitentiary because you couldn't stand the thought of sharing a car for a few weeks! Is your petty little ego worth destroying this family?"
"The family was destroyed long before today, Dad," I replied, pulling my shoulder out of his grip with a sharp jerk. "You just finally got the bill for it."
Harrison hurried up behind him, looking anxious, checking to see if any reporters were lingering nearby. "Elina, please, let’s be rational. Your father is willing to make a concession. If you drop the criminal complaint today, he will reinstate your name in the family trust. Fifty-fifty split with Lucas, just like we originally planned. No harm done."
I looked at my father, watching the desperate calculation behind his angry eyes. Even now, standing in front of a courthouse after his son had been remanded on felony charges, he still believed everything could be bought off with a stale promise of future inheritance.
"There is no trust left to fight over, Harrison," I said calmly, opening my briefcase to reveal a thick manila folder. "While you were busy trying to figure out how to cover up Lucas's felony, I had a forensic accountant review the family land deed and trust management records from the last ten years."
My father’s color shifted from purple to a sickly, chalky grey. "What... what are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about the fact that three years ago, when Lucas bought his first failed business, you quietly mortgaged the family property using my name on a guarantor line without my consent," I said, locking eyes with him. "Which means not only am I walking away from the trust, but I am also filing a secondary motion for financial fraud against the estate."
Harrison froze, his jaw dropping as he whipped his head around to stare at my father. "Arthur... tell me she's bluffing. Tell me you didn't forge her name on a commercial guarantor loan."

My father didn't answer. He couldn't. His silence was a complete, deafening confession.
