Chapter 1 - The Echo of an Empty Hallway

The heavy oak door of our penthouse suite clicked open, the automated lock chiming a cheerful greeting that felt like a cruel joke. Adrian Vale tossed his leather weekend duffel onto the entryway bench, his posture loose and relaxed from six days under the California sun. He loosened his silk tie, unbuttoned the top collar of his shirt, and exhaled a long breath of luxury fatigue.

"Claire?" he called out, his voice echoing off the minimalist white walls. "I'm back. And before you start asking about Napa, let me tell you—the acquisition talks went better than expected."

He unzipped his briefcase, tossing a bundle of receipts onto the marble counter before turning toward the living room. The silence of the apartment struck him then. It wasn't the peaceful quiet of an early morning; it was the dense, suffocating vacuum of a space that had been scrubbed clean of life.

The nursery door, usually cracked open to the soft hum of the air purifier, was pulled tight shut. The living room coffee table, typically cluttered with my prenatal journals and water bottles, was entirely bare.

A sharp rustle of fabric made him turn. Noah stepped out from the hallway leading to the master suite. The assistant looked like he had aged five years in six days. His tie was crooked, his shirt collar stained with sweat, and his hands trembled slightly as he clutched a thick manila folder against his chest.

"Noah," Adrian said, his eyebrows narrowing in irritation. "What are you doing here? Did I not tell you I wanted zero office interruptions until Monday?"

Noah didn't step forward. He kept his heels planted near the baseboard, his eyes fixed on the floorboards between them.

"Sir," Noah began, his voice cracking slightly on the consonant. "Your flight landed forty minutes ago. I tried to intercept you at the private hangar, but your car beat me here."

"Skip the prologue," Adrian snapped, crossing his arms over his chest as he walked toward the kitchen. "Where is Claire? Is she still asleep? Honestly, if she's going to spend the whole day sulking over a delayed business trip, she needs to realize—"

"Sir, your wife had a serious medical emergency," Noah interrupted, his voice dropping into a flat, terrifying register that cut right through Adrian's bluster. "She lost the baby. And she has already signed the divorce papers."

The kitchen seemed to tilt on its axis. Adrian’s mouth remained half-open, the condescending retort dying in his throat as his eyes locked onto his assistant's pale, unblinking face.
