Chapter 6 - The Ghost Account

The digits glowing on my phone screen did not fluctuate. Three million, four hundred thousand dollars. Transferred in a single lump sum from our joint personal holdings to an unlisted account in Zurich, routed through a shell corporation with a name so sterile it sounded like a medical clinic: Aegis Holdings Ltd.

Marcus Vance leaned over the mahogany table, his eyes narrowing as he read the notification over my shoulder.

"That's impossible," Marcus muttered, his legal calm finally cracking. "Judge Callahan's asset freeze order was transmitted to every major clearinghouse in the tri-state area by four o'clock yesterday. No domestic bank would authorize an international wire transfer of that scale against a frozen primary asset without triggering a federal compliance flag."

"They didn't use a domestic clearinghouse," I said, my voice dropping into a quiet, icy register that sent a shiver down my spine. I scrolled down the encrypted transaction ledger, tracing the routing numbers. "Look at the originating routing code, Marcus. It’s a shadow account managed through the corporate credit line of Vale Meridian’s European subsidiary. Adrian didn't move it from our personal checking. He funneled it through the R&D discretionary fund while I was still in the hospital recovering."

The boardroom doors swung open before Marcus could answer.

Noah stood in the threshold, looking flushed and breathless, holding a heavy cardboard archive box against his chest. He didn't wait for permission to enter; he hurried straight to the table and dumped a cascade of yellowed financial files onto the polished wood.

"Mrs. Vale—Claire," Noah corrected himself quickly, his chest heaving. "I spent the last four hours tearing through the physical archives in the basement compliance vault. You need to see who signed off on the creation of Aegis Holdings three years ago."

I reached out and pulled the top folder toward me. Inside was a corporate incorporation certificate stamped by a notary public in the Cayman Islands.

The signature line for the primary beneficiary wasn't Adrian Vale.

It was my mother.
