Chapter 10 - The Trap Springs Shut

A micro-second flash of genuine panic crossed Director Sterling’s composed features before she quickly masked it with a cold smirk.

"A wire," she murmured, glancing down at my lapel. "Clever, Captain. But do you really think a tactical audio recording is enough to bring down a conglomerate that has the Department of Justice on speed dial?"

"No," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from behind the line of private security guards. "It isn't. Which is why I brought a few friends."

The heavy iron gates at the end of the private runway swung open wide with a metallic screech.

A convoy of three black military SUVs bearing official Department of Defense seals tore through the entrance, tires churning up gravel as they surrounded the tarmac, boxing in Vanguard's security detail before they could even raise their weapons.

The lead vehicle's door swung open, and Colonel Arthur Vance stepped out into the mist, flanked by two federal marshals holding heavy arrest warrants stamped with federal judicial signatures.

Director Sterling’s security guards instinctively raised their rifles, but before they could level them, the red laser sights of half a dozen sniper rifles positioned on the surrounding hangar roofs painted their chests in a grid of absolute crimson.

"Stand down, or your next breath will be your last," one of the federal marshals called out, his voice echoing across the empty airfield.

Director Sterling didn't move. She didn't drop her tablet, and she didn't blink. She simply looked from the armed federal agents to Colonel Vance, a slow, dangerous smile touching the corners of her mouth.

"You think arresting me solves anything, Colonel?" she asked, her voice carrying an eerie, unbothered confidence. "The data has already been mirrored off-site. The structural collapse of your precious defense network has already begun. You can lock me in a cell, but you can't stop what's coming."

Colonel Vance didn't flinch. He walked past the circle of guards, stopping right beside me, his eyes fixed squarely on Sterling.

"We aren't here to stop the data transfer, Director," Vance said coldly, pulling a secondary arrest warrant from his inner coat pocket and unfolding it. "We're here to execute a federal seizure warrant for every asset owned by Vanguard Holdings under the Patriot Act."

He turned his gaze toward me, nodding slightly. "Good catch, Captain Bennett. Now, drop the weapon and step away from her."

I released my grip on my sidearm, stepping back as the federal marshals swarmed forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around Director Sterling’s wrists.

As they shoved her toward the back of the military SUV, she looked back over her shoulder, her eyes locking onto mine with a final, chilling parting shot.

"You think you won, Claire? Check your phone. The moment we landed on this tarmac, a pre-scheduled emergency transfer was triggered."

My pocket buzzed.

I pulled out my phone, unlocked the screen, and stared at the incoming priority alert.

It wasn't a corporate memo. It was a live bank notification showing that every single cent of my personal savings, my military pension, and Ethan’s architectural firm accounts had just been wiped clean—and transferred into an anonymous offshore account registered under my own name.
