Chapter 3 - The Groom’s Ultimatum

The heavy silence in the vestry was broken only by the distant hum of traffic outside the church windows.

"What kind of workaround?" Ethan asked, his voice low and dangerous as he picked up the keys. They weren't car keys. They were heavy, stamped steel keys bearing the insignia of a private hangar at the municipal airfield.

"The kind that requires an active-duty captain to execute a high-priority transport mission," Vance said, his expression unreadable. "A priority flight to an undisclosed location in the Mojave. If Claire is in the air under direct military orders before the DOD arrest warrant is officially logged into the main system, the jurisdictional authority shifts. She isn't a fugitive; she's an operational asset."

I stared at the keys, then down at my pristine dress uniform. The medals on my chest suddenly felt less like a celebration of my past and more like heavy iron chains.

"And what happens to the wedding, Colonel?" Ethan’s voice cracked slightly, the raw pain in his eyes cutting deeper than any insult my father had ever hurled at me. "We invited two hundred people. My mother is out there managing a room full of confused guests. You're asking my bride to walk out of her own wedding for a ghost mission?"

"I'm not asking her anything, Ethan," Vance replied softly. "I'm telling you that if she stays, she spends her honeymoon in a federal penitentiary while her brother walks free with a paycheck from whoever bought those encrypted files."

My father burst back into the vestry then, having bypassed the door guard. His face was purple with rage, his finger pointing aggressively at my chest.

"What did you do now, Claire?" Frank shouted, spittle flying from his lips. "The police are outside! They're asking about security breaches! You've ruined our family name for good! I always knew you were a liability—a bitter, arrogant failure who couldn't even keep a simple wedding together!"

For thirty-two years, that voice had made me shrink. It had made me second-guess every promotion, every flight hour, every triumph.

I didn't shrink this time.

I stepped past Ethan, walked straight up to my father until my cap visor was inches from his face, and looked him dead in the eyes.

"You didn't destroy my wedding by cutting up dresses, Dad," I said, my voice dangerously calm, devoid of all the old hesitation. "And you aren't going to destroy my life by covering up Tyler's crimes."

I turned back to Vance, reached out, and picked up the hangar keys from the table.

"Give me the flight plan, Colonel," I said. "I'm flying."
