Chapter 5 - The Federal Trap

"Re-opened?" Adrian spun around, his professional composure shattering instantly as he stared at Sloane. "That's impossible! Vance gave me his word the docket was sealed and expunged!"

"Vance lied," Sloane said, taking a hurried step into the office and thrusting the tablet toward Adrian. "Look at the digital service timestamp. The federal subpoena was filed electronically three minutes ago. They aren't just targeting the Harbor Nine transfer—they're seizing all personal and corporate assets under suspicion of systemic document fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering."

I stood frozen by my desk, the blood draining from my face until my fingertips went entirely numb.

Document fraud. Conspiracy. Money laundering.

Every single charge pointed directly at the master compliance administrator who had approved, signed, and logged thousands of corporate transactions over the last fifteen years.

Me.

Adrian snatched the tablet from Sloane's hands, his eyes darting across the legal text with frantic speed. The charismatic, untouchable CEO of Vale Meridian Group was gone, replaced by a cornered man realizing too late that he had played a game he couldn't win.

"This doesn't make any sense," Adrian muttered, running a hand through his dark hair. "If Vance wanted Harbor Nine, why would he immediately blow up the settlement and drop a federal indictment on us? It ruins his own acquisition!"

"Because Arthur Vance didn't want Harbor Nine just to own a shipping terminal, Adrian," I said, my voice dropping into a cold, lethal calm that made both of them turn to look at me.

Adrian frowned, looking up from the tablet. "What are you talking about?"

"Think about it," I said, walking slowly around the desk until I stood right beside them. "If I am indicted for document fraud and corporate forgery, every single compliance agreement, asset transfer, and financial audit I signed over the last fifteen years becomes legally tainted. Do you know what happens to the Vale empire when the courts declare every corporate restructure I ever touched null and void?"

Adrian’s breath hitched. The pieces finally locked together in his mind.

"The entire holding company dissolves," Adrian whispered, horror dawning in his eyes. "Every asset reverts back to the original pre-consolidation syndicate receivership... controlled by Arthur Vance."

"He didn't just want Harbor Nine," I said, a bitter, humorless smile touching the corners of my mouth. "He wanted the whole damn kingdom back. And you just handed him the battering ram to break down the front gate."

Sloane swallowed hard, her professional veneer completely gone. "Mr. Vale... what do we do? If the federal marshals arrive with the asset freeze order, we won't even be able to make payroll by Friday."

Adrian looked at me, desperation and a shred of lingering marital pleading flashing in his eyes. "Nora. You compliance database... you have the original offline audit logs. You have the encrypted keys that prove when my signature was forged, and when those files were accessed remotely without your authorization. If you hand those over to the SEC and the DOJ—"

"I'll be handing over the proof that my own husband engineered a criminal conspiracy to bypass corporate governance," I interrupted, my voice cutting him off like a razor. "Do you really think the federal prosecutor is going to give me a medal for being your accomplice, Adrian?"

Before Adrian could answer, the heavy double doors at the end of the executive hallway swung open with a resounding bang.

Heavy, synchronized footsteps echoed across the marble floor outside our office.

"Federal marshals!" a deep, authoritative voice boomed down the corridor. "Nobody move! Stay where you are!"

Adrian and Sloane turned toward the doorway in absolute panic.

I didn't panic.

I reached down calmly into my desk drawer, pulled out my encrypted flash drive containing every single file, log, and photograph of the last seventy-two hours, and slipped it securely into the inside pocket of my blazer.

The office doors pushed wide open, revealing three armed federal agents in tactical vests, led by an Assistant U.S. Attorney holding a thick stack of blue-backed legal documents.

"Nora Vale?" the prosecutor asked, stepping into the room and locking his eyes directly onto mine. "You're under arrest."
