Chapter 3 - Turbulence Ahead

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking," the pilot's voice boomed through the cabin speakers, carrying a tense, professional edge. "We’ve just received an automated alert from our ground communications relay regarding an unexpected viral data spike originating from the aircraft's onboard Wi-Fi network. Additionally, we’ve been informed by flight crew that a passenger disturbance has occurred in row fourteen. Please remain seated while we assess the situation."

Across the aisle, several passengers whipped out their smartphones, frantically tapping away at their screens.

"Hey, look at this," a teenager two rows down muttered to his friend, his eyes wide. "Some lady from a flight just went viral on Twitter. Local community page in Westchester. Someone posted a close-up photo of her screaming at a mom with a baby, and it’s already got twenty thousand shares."

My stomach plummeted straight down toward the cargo hold.

The woman who had screamed at me wasn't just an ordinary angry passenger. If her social media profile had enough traction for a local page to pick up a live air-dropped photo within seconds, she was likely one of those micro-influencers or corporate PR consultants who lived and died by their public image. And my eight-year-old daughter had just detonated a social media nuke right in the middle of her personal brand.

I looked down at my son. He had finished feeding and had drifted off into a peaceful, milk-drunk sleep against my shoulder, completely oblivious to the digital warzone erupting around us.

A flight attendant marched down the aisle, her expression tight and unsmiling, stopping directly beside our row.

"Excuse me, ma'am," the flight attendant said, her voice clipped. "Are you the mother of the child in seat thirteen B?"

"Yes," I said, my heart hammering against my ribs. "I am. Is there a problem?"

"The passenger from fourteen B has locked herself in the forward lavatory and is demanding that airline security meet us at the gate," the attendant said, her eyes shifting to Louise before returning to me. "She is claiming that your minor child harassed her electronically and violated her privacy rights in federal airspace."

A collective gasp echoed softly from the surrounding rows.

I opened my mouth to defend my daughter, ready to explain the vile things the woman had screamed at us just minutes prior, when Louise leaned forward, resting her chin on her hands.

"Excuse me, miss," Louise said politely, her voice carrying an uncanny, adult-like poise. "Did she mention the part where she harassed my mother for breastfeeding an infant, or did she leave that out of her emergency broadcast?"

The flight attendant blinked, momentarily stunned by the composure of an eight-year-old child citing interpersonal conflict analysis.
