Chapter 9 - The Federal Raid

A wall of uniformed officers swarmed the perimeter of the mobile van, their badges flashing under the runway lights. Leading the entry team was a tall, broad-shouldered man in a federal marshal’s windbreaker, his hand resting calmly on his holster as he stepped up into the doorway.
"Agent Vance, step away from the civilians," the marshal ordered, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Internal Affairs and the Department of Justice are taking custody of this mobile unit under federal warrant docket number 409-B."
Victoria Sterling froze mid-motion, her hand still raised. Color drained entirely from her face as she looked past the marshal and saw three senior federal prosecutors stepping out from behind the tactical team, flanked by digital forensic investigators carrying heavy-duty evidence cases.
"This is an outrage," Victoria sputtered, her voice rising in frantic desperation as she grabbed her designer coat. "We are private corporate entities! You have no jurisdiction over internal security protocols—"
"Corporate jurisdiction ends the moment you deploy federal-spec intelligence assets to intimidate a grieving widow and an eight-year-old child on a public commercial flight, Mrs. Sterling," the marshal cut across her cleanly, stepping inside the van. He turned his attention to me, his expression softening into genuine professional respect. "Mrs. Miller? I'm Marshal Thomas. Are you and your daughter alright?"
"We're... we're cold," I managed to say, my knees shaking so violently I had to lean against the edge of the computer console for support. "My baby... he needs to get out of this hangar."
"Of course, ma'am. Medics are standing by at the main terminal," Marshal Thomas said, nodding to a pair of female officers who immediately stepped forward to escort us out of the freezing van.
As we walked down the metal steps into the open air, I looked back one last time. Victoria Sterling was being cuffed by two federal agents, her expensive wool coat dragging against the oil-stained concrete of the tarmac. Agent Vance was already seated in the back of a transport cruiser, his tablet confiscated and locked inside an electromagnetic evidence bag.
I pulled Louise close against my side, wrapping my winter scarf around her small shoulders, while my baby finally drifted into a deep, safe sleep in my arms.

We were finally off the plane. We were safe from the corporate vultures.
Or so I foolishly believed, until one of the forensic investigators rushed out of the command van, shouting across the tarmac toward Marshal Thomas with a panicked look on his face.
