Chapter 7 - The Grand Continental Penthouse

The private dining room on the top floor of the Grand Continental Hotel offered a panoramic view of the glittering Cleveland skyline, framed by crystal chandeliers and walls of dark, polished mahogany.
Derek and Ashley arrived precisely at seven o'clock, dressed in their finest evening wear, clearly expecting a humble, emotional apology from an elderly mother who had realized she went too far.
Instead, they found Sandra sitting at the head of a long, banquet-sized table dressed in a stunning emerald-green silk dress they had never seen before, diamond earrings catching the overhead light. Standing right beside her chair, wearing a sharp, custom-fitted suit, was Jake.
Ashley stopped dead in her tracks, her jaw dropping. "Mom? Where did you... what is this?"
"Welcome, children," Sandra said, her voice cool, poised, and entirely devoid of warmth. She gestured to the empty seats opposite her. "Please, sit down. We have a great deal to discuss."
Derek stepped forward, his eyes darting around the lavish room—the private waitstaff, the silver service, the vintage champagne chilling in a crystal bucket. His financial radar went off instantly. This wasn't a few thousand dollars from a savings bond. This room alone cost more than a month of his mortgage.
"Mom, are you out of your mind?" Derek demanded, pulling out a chair and sitting down heavily. "Renting the penthouse at the Grand Continental? Have you lost all sense of financial security? You live on a diner pension!"
"Correction, Derek," a smooth voice interrupted from the doorway.
Jonathan Sterling, the senior partner from Sterling, Vance & Miller, stepped into the room carrying a sleek leather portfolio. He nodded politely to Sandra before taking a seat at the corner of the table.

Ashley’s eyes darted from the attorney to her mother. "Who is this? Mom, why is there a lawyer here?"
"This," Sandra said smoothly, lifting a glass of sparkling water, "is the man who manages my estate."
