Chapter 9 - The Truth Unveiled

Jonathan Sterling looked up from his papers, offering a cold, professional smile.

"Three weeks ago, Mrs. Williams purchased a single Mega Millions ticket in Columbus," Sterling announced clearly across the silent room. "The winning payout totaled two hundred and thirty-three million dollars."

The air seemed to leave the penthouse entirely.

Derek sank back into his chair, his face turning the color of ash. His mouth opened and closed silently, his brain violently trying to compute the number. Two hundred and thirty-three million. Not a few thousand. Not a lucky pension payout. An absolute, life-altering fortune.

Ashley let out a sharp, breathless gasp, her hands flying to cover her mouth. "Two... two hundred and thirty-three... Mom? You won the lottery?!"

"I did," Sandra said calmly.

Derek’s shock instantly curdled into a frantic, manic calculation of pure greed. He lunged across the table, his hands gripping the edge of the mahogany, a desperate, ingratiating smile plastered across his face.

"Mom! Oh, my god, Mom, that is... that is incredible!" Derek stammered, his voice pitching high and breathless. "Why didn't you say anything?! We were just—we were just playing around the other day! You know how stressful my banking job is, I didn't mean those things on the phone, I was just trying to teach you financial discipline! But with a family trust like this... think of the investments we can make together!"

Ashley joined in instantly, tears of theatrical relief springing to her eyes as she rushed around the table to throw her arms around Sandra’s shoulders. "Oh, Mom! I knew you had a blessing coming your way! We're your children! We've loved you all this time! We can buy a vacation home, we can set up the kids' college funds—"

Sandra didn't flinch. She didn't hug Ashley back.

She simply raised one hand, and her daughter froze.
