Chapter 1 - Behind the Double Doors

The silence that followed the head chef’s words felt thick enough to touch.

Marlene’s fork hovered an inch above her plate, the glistening piece of lobster meat slipping back onto the white porcelain with a soft plop. Her mother’s hand froze mid-gesture as she reached for her wine glass, while her father’s eyes darted nervously between the chef and me, as if trying to calculate an equation that suddenly refused to balance.

Michael looked like he had seen a ghost. His color had completely drained, leaving his skin an ashen gray beneath the warm amber glow of the crystal chandelier.

“Chef... you must be mistaken,” Michael stammered, his voice cracking slightly as he half-stood from his chair. He offered a tight, desperate smile to the tall man in the pristine white jacket. “My mother is just... she’s retired. She doesn’t have any business here. She’s just our guest tonight.”

The chef, a towering man with a commanding presence and silvering hair at his temples named Chef Laurent, didn’t even glance at my son. His polite, deferential posture remained entirely focused on me.

“There is no mistake, Mr. Vance,” Chef Laurent replied, his voice smooth with a faint French cadence that carried across the surrounding tables. He turned his attention back to me, his expression softening into genuine warmth. “The shipment just arrived from Marseille, Mrs. Helen. And you know as well as I do that nothing goes onto the evening specials until you’ve personally inspected the catch.”

A low murmur rippled through the nearby tables, where well-dressed patrons had begun noticing the unusual interaction.

I gave Chef Laurent a slow, approving nod. I placed my napkin neatly beside my untouched glass of water, smoothed the front of my pearl-gray dress, and gracefully stood up from my chair at the very edge of the table.

“Thank you, Laurent,” I said quietly. “Let’s go take a look.”

As I stepped past my son’s chair, I didn’t look down at him. But I could hear the ragged, shallow breath he took as his entire reality began to tilt off its axis.
