Chapter 6 - The Proprietor’s Walk

The quiet hum of the high-end dining room seemed to fade entirely as I stepped out from the hallway, every eye at Table Four locked in my direction.

Marlene stood up so abruptly her chair screeched against the polished wood floor, her face flushed with a mixture of burning humiliation and absolute terror. Her parents looked away, suddenly intensely fascinated by the crystal water goblets in front of them, eager to distance themselves from a public disaster they had helped orchestrate.

Michael remained frozen in his seat, staring at me as if he were seeing a stranger wearing a mask crafted from his mother’s face.

I walked slowly, my heels clicking softly against the marble tiles, stopping just a few feet from their table. I didn't look at the half-eaten lobsters or the empty water glass they had forced upon me earlier. I looked straight into my son’s wide, panicked eyes.

"I worked everywhere, Michael," I replied quietly. "To make sure you never had to wonder where your next meal was coming from. To make sure you went to college, got your degree, and married a woman who taught you how to look down on the person who carried you through every hardship of your life."

Marlene’s face twisted into an ugly, defensive grimace. She stepped forward, trying to salvage whatever shreds of her arrogant pride she had left.

"This is a joke," Marlene hissed, pointing a trembling finger at me. "Some kind of sick, elaborate prank! You don't own a building like this! You're just a bitter old woman who—"

Before she could finish, Chef Laurent stepped out of the office hallway, standing shoulder-to-shoulder beside me with a look of icy, professional disdain.

"Mrs. Helen Vance is the sole majority shareholder of Vance Real Estate Holdings and the primary proprietor of this entire commercial district," Chef Laurent announced, his voice carrying clearly across the silent room. "And as the proprietor, she has requested that your party settle your check and leave the premises immediately."
