Chapter 4 - Penthouse Confession

The private elevator chime sounded like a hammer hitting an anvil when the doors slid open on the sixty-fifth floor.

The Mercer Holdings penthouse didn't look like an office; it looked like a museum of greed. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the glittering Manhattan skyline, reflecting crystal chandeliers, Italian leather furniture, and a massive mahogany wet bar stocked with vintage scotch.

At the center of the room, standing by the glass with a crystal tumbler in his hand, was my younger brother, Julian.

He wore a custom-tailored charcoal suit that cost more than most families made in six months, his blond hair slicked back with expensive pomade. He looked relaxed, unbothered, and entirely confident in his little kingdom.

“Sarah was supposed to have those files shredded by nine,” Julian said without turning around, swirling his drink. “You really need to hire a more efficient administrative staff, brother. Or better yet... why are you here, Luke? I thought you were drowning your sorrows in some cheap dive bar after cutting ties with your little girlfriend.”

I didn't answer. I walked slowly across the plush Persian rug, my boots making no sound, until I was standing just behind him.

Julian finally turned around, a smug, condescending smile plastered across his face. But the moment his eyes locked onto mine, the smile faltered. The glass in his hand stopped moving.

“What?” Julian forced a dry laugh, taking a step back toward the wet bar. “Why are you looking at me like that? Did someone look at you crossways down at the docks?”

“You knew she was pregnant, Julian,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper, yet it filled the massive room with a terrifying resonance.

Julian’s throat bobbed as he swallowed hard, the smug mask cracking completely. “What are you talking about? Who—who’s pregnant?”

“Elena,” I said, taking another step forward. “My ex-wife. The woman you systematically starved, isolated, and medically neglected for the last three months while you forged my signature to drain her accounts.”

Julian let out a sharp, nervous scoff, trying to rebuild his crumbling armor. “You’re out of your mind, Luke! Elena left you! She’s nothing to us! Why the hell would I waste my time on some bitter ex-wife?”

Before he could finish the sentence, I lunged forward, grabbed him by the lapels of his expensive suit, and threw him across the room with enough force to shatter a glass coffee table into a thousand glittering shards.

Julian crashed hard onto the floor, gasping for air as he clutched his ribs, his designer suit ruined by broken glass and spilled scotch.

“You son of a bitch!” Julian screamed, coughing as he tried to scramble backward. “I’m your brother! You can’t touch me! The board—the family—they’ll tear you apart!”

I stood over him, pulled my Glock from its holster, and slammed the heavy metal barrel down hard against the hardwood floor right beside his ear.

“The family doesn't give a damn about you anymore, Julian,” I snarled, leaning down until my face was inches from his. “You killed an innocent woman on 82nd Street to cover your tracks. You tortured the mother of my child. And now you’re going to tell me who ‘The Broker’ is, and where the offshore transfer keys are hidden—or I swear to God, I won't let the cops take you. I’ll feed you to the docks myself.”

Julian stared up at me, his eyes bloodshot and wide with terror, realizing for the first time that his older brother wasn't just playing mob boss anymore.

“Okay! Okay, I’ll tell you!” Julian choked out, his hands raised in surrender. “The Broker... he’s not just an independent contractor, Luke. He works for the commission. And he didn't just want Elena’s money—he wanted her because of who her father was before he died.”

I froze. “What does her father have to do with this?”

Before Julian could answer, the red emergency alarm on the penthouse security terminal began to strobe violently, casting a bloody crimson glow across the room.
