Chapter 5 - Madison Avenue

The morning sun cast long, sharp shadows across the marble lobby of the Moretti townhouse on Madison Avenue.
I didn't wear a traditional business suit today. I wore a custom charcoal tailored overcoat, black leather gloves, and the heavy gold signet ring of the Moretti patriarch—a ring my grandfather had passed to me before he died, which my mother had spent years trying to manipulate me into relinquishing.
When I pushed open the heavy oak doors of the second-floor executive boardroom, all six regional capos looked up from the long mahogany table.
At the head of the table sat Elena Moretti, draped in black velvet and diamond brooches, her expression an icy mask of absolute triumph. Standing directly behind her right shoulder was Arthur Vance, holding a thick leather portfolio of asset transfer documents.
"You’re late, Dominic," my mother said, her voice echoing off the high, frescoed ceilings. "And based on your refusal to answer your primary phone, I assume you’ve come to your senses and realized that playing domestic hero in Tribeca is over."
I didn't take a seat. I walked slowly down the center of the room, my boots clicking rhythmically against the floor, stopping midway down the table.
"Mother," I said smoothly. "I hear we're voting on my future."
"We are voting on the survival of this family," Elena snapped, slamming her palm down on the wood. "You humiliated the Cartwrights, you tanked our shipping alliance, and you brought a penniless waitress and her illegitimate brats into our inner circle! You are unfit to lead!"
Murmurs of agreement rippled through the capos. Old men loyal to my mother’s iron-fisted rule nodded grimly.
Arthur Vance stepped forward, opening his leather portfolio and sliding a stack of papers toward my place at the table. "Under Article Four of the syndicate charter, your mother has reassumed operational control. Sign the voluntary abdication, Dominic, and we’ll ensure you receive a modest stipend in exile."
I looked down at the papers. Then I looked up at Arthur.
"Exile?" I smiled, a slow, dangerous expression that made the veteran lawyer take half a step backward. "Arthur, before you execute a hostile takeover, didn't your legal team think to run a forensic audit on the primary corporate accounts?"
Arthur’s eyebrows furrowed. "What are you talking about?"
I reached into my overcoat pocket, pulled out a sleek silver flash drive, and tossed it onto the polished mahogany table. It slid across the wood and clattered softly against Arthur’s coffee cup.
"For the last six years, while my mother was busy paying off couriers and staging disappearances," I said, my voice cutting through the silent room like a razor, "she’s been quietly embezzling forty percent of the syndicate's offshore logistics revenue into a private shell corporation registered under a pseudonym in the Cayman Islands."
Elena’s face went completely, horrifically white.
"That's a lie!" she shrieked, half-rising from her chair. "He's fabricating documents!"
"I'm not fabricating anything, Mother," I replied calmly. "The shell corporation is named Vance & Moretti Holdings. Arthur, didn't you realize that when my mother used your personal legal seal to file those offshore articles of incorporation back in 2020, she made you the secondary beneficiary on paper?"
Arthur’s color drained until he looked like a corpse. He spun around to look at Elena, his voice cracking with sudden panic. "Elena? What is he talking about?"
"Don't listen to him, Arthur! It's a trick!" she screamed, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into a feral panic.
Before Arthur could reach for the flash drive, the heavy boardroom doors swung wide open.

Two federal agents from the IRS Organized Crime Task Force—accompanied by four armed NYPD tactical officers—stepped smoothly into the room, their badges gleaming under the chandeliers.
"Arthur Vance and Elena Moretti," the lead federal agent announced, his voice booming across the room as he pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for federal tax evasion, wire fraud, and interstate conspiracy."
