Chapter 7 - The Mask Slips

Arya’s hand flew to her throat, her chest heaving as the polite, sweet facade she had worn all evening cracked down the middle like cheap porcelain.

“Vincent... what—what are you doing with that?” she stammered, taking a nervous step backward toward the bathroom door. “Put it down! Have you lost your mind? The sedatives must be making you delirious—”

“Save the performance for the jury, Arya,” I interrupted, my voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. I motioned toward Tessa with the barrel of the gun. “Lock the bedroom door from the inside. We aren't being interrupted tonight.”

Tessa moved instantly, throwing the heavy brass deadbolt across the frame with a satisfying, echoing clack.

Arya’s face flushed red, the panic rapidly mutating into a cold, venomous fury. She realized the game of polite pretense was over. She dropped her hands to her sides, her posture straightening as the helpless fiancée act melted away, revealing the ruthless opportunist underneath.

“You knew,” Arya hissed, her voice dropping the honeyed sweetness entirely, turning sharp and brittle. “How long have you known?”

“Long enough to know that forty percent of Corvino Logistics isn't worth the price of a cheap accomplice,” I said, leaning forward against the pillows, my eyes locked on hers. “Did you really think I’d sit here in this bed, popping pills and letting you and Dominic carve up my life while I watched?”

“You’re a cripple, Vincent!” Arya screamed, her composure finally snapping completely as she stepped toward the bed, pointing a trembling finger at my paralyzed legs. “You’re sitting in your own filth, waiting for someone to wipe your back! The empire you built is finished! You can’t walk, you can’t sign a check without trembling, and if we hadn't stepped in, the banks would have foreclosed on every warehouse from here to Boston by next month!”

“Is that what Dominic told you?” I asked calmly.

“It’s what the numbers say!” she snarled, crossing her arms over her silk robe. “Dominic filed the emergency conservatorship petition tonight. By nine o'clock tomorrow morning, a court bailiff is walking through that door to take you to a care facility, and you’ll never see a single shipping manifest again.”

“He filed it at twelve-four,” I noted, a cold, humorless smile touching my lips. “Which means his lawyer is currently sitting in a home office downtown waiting for the electronic confirmation from the night magistrate.”

Arya’s eyes narrowed suspiciously. “What of it?”

“Tessa,” I said, not breaking eye contact with my fiancée. “Hand me the encrypted burner phone from the bottom drawer of the nightstand.”
