Chapter 10 - Midnight Protocol

The digital clock on the office wall glowed red: 11:45 PM.
The basement office beneath Maya’s repair shop hummed with the aggressive whir of three cooling fans running at maximum capacity. The offline laptop screen cast an eerie green glow across Tessa’s face as her fingers flew across the keyboard in a blinding blur of alphanumeric commands.
Maya stood behind her, watching the progress bar on the monitor creep forward at a agonizingly slow pace.
"11:48 PM. System warning: Firewall defense active."
"How much longer?" Maya whispered, wringing her hands together. "If Elena's cronies check the portal at midnight and see zero activity, they're going to transmit the audit files to the field office."
"Let them try," Tessa said, her voice completely steady, her eyes locked on the scrolling lines of code. "They think they're dealing with a naive waitress who got lucky in a corporate boardroom. They don't know that my father spent twenty years teaching me how to stress-test structural blueprints before pouring concrete."
She hit a final sequence of keys and pressed Enter.
A harsh, metallic beep echoed from the laptop speaker. The screen flickered black, then flashed a brilliant, solid blue.
A data stream began downloading at breakneck speed—not into Conrad’s accounts, not into Veritas Global’s Swiss portal, but straight into an encrypted federal whistleblower drop box managed by the Department of Justice's internal integrity unit.
"File transfer complete. 1.4 gigabytes transmitted."
Maya let out a ragged, disbelieving gasp. "What... what did you just send them?"
"Everything," Tessa said, leaning back in her chair and letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt like shedding a skin she had worn for five years. "Every shell company, every municipal kickback, every forged tax document, and the complete communication logs between Elena Vance and Conrad's offshore accounts."
Before Maya could answer, Tessa’s phone—lying faceup on the cluttered desk—began to ring.
It wasn't an unknown VoIP number from Zurich.
It was a direct cellular call from an unlisted, secure line belonging to the federal prosecutor handling Conrad's arraignment.
Tessa looked at the screen, watched the caller ID flash for three seconds, and then slowly reached out and pressed accept.
"Mrs. Vance?" a deep, urgent voice came through the speaker. "We just received a priority data dump originating from a secure terminal matching your digital signature. Where are you right now?"
May you like
Tessa looked across the desk at Maya, who was watching her with wide, breathless eyes.
"I'm right where I need to be, Agent Vance," Tessa said calmly, a faint, dangerous smile touching the corners of her mouth. "And I think we have some uninvited guests coming down the driveway."
