Chapter 6 - The Zurich Echo

The glass of the boardroom window remained cold against Tessa’s palm, a sharp contrast to the sudden, hollow heat blooming in her chest.
She stared down at her phone screen resting on the mahogany surface. The glowing text notification pulsed in a steady, rhythmic cadence: an international routing ping originating from a private node in Zurich, Switzerland.
The door to the boardroom clicked open, and David Sterling, the corporate legal counsel, stepped back inside, holding his breath as if walking through a crime scene. He glanced at the empty space where Conrad had stood just moments before, then looked toward Tessa.
"The federal marshals have him in custody, Mrs. Vance," David said carefully, his voice subdued. "The transfer to the federal detention facility is underway. But... I assume you saw the notification?"
Tessa didn't turn around immediately. She kept her eyes fixed on the Zurich ping. "Conrad wasn't the master architect of the offshore holdings, David. He was just the local branch manager."
David swallowed hard, walking closer to the table. "What are you talking about? Every subsidiary asset was registered under Conrad's corporate passport."
"Only on paper," Tessa said, finally turning around. Her expression was completely devoid of triumph. The adrenaline of the boardroom ambush had curdled into a cold, metallic dread. "Conrad was arrogant, but he wasn't sophisticated enough to orchestrate a multi-million-dollar cross-border layering scheme without leaving a paper trail a mile wide. Someone else set up the primary firewall in Zurich six years ago. Exactly one month before Conrad and I were married."
David’s eyes widened behind his wire-rimmed glasses. "Who?"
Before Tessa could answer, the phone on the table lit up again. It wasn't a text anymore. It was an incoming encrypted VoIP call from the Zurich node.
Tessa reached down, her thumb hovering over the accept button. The screen displayed a single, chilling caller ID name: Vance Holdings Global — Estate Division.
She pressed accept and put it on speaker.
"Hello, Tessa," a voice murmured through the tinny speaker. It was smooth, feminine, and utterly devoid of warmth—a voice Tessa had heard only once before, years ago, at a charity gala where Conrad had introduced her as an old family associate. "Congratulations on the hostile takeover. It took real spine to dismantle Conrad's little empire. But you really should have checked who owned the mortgage on the Buckhead mansion before you locked the front doors."
Tessa’s breath caught. "Who is this?"
"Someone who owns every brick you're standing on," the voice replied softly. "And your little friend Maya's upholstery shop, too. See you soon, Tessa."

The line went dead with a sharp click.
