Chapter 3 - The Hospital Ward

The maternity ward of Saint Aurelia Women’s Pavilion smelled of antiseptic, baby powder, and quiet panic. When I stepped off the elevator on the fourth floor, the sterile white corridors were uncharacteristically crowded. Two uniformed police officers were standing outside Suite 412, speaking in hushed, urgent tones with a hospital administrator.

I didn't slow my pace. I walked down the corridor with the poise of a woman attending a charity luncheon, my heels clicking sharply against the linoleum.

"Excuse me, ma'am, this area is restricted," one of the officers stepped forward, blocking my path.

"I am Vivienne Ashford," I said smoothly, flashing my ID. "That room is registered under my family insurance policy, and my husband is currently inside. I suggest you let me pass before I call your precinct captain."

The officer hesitated, recognizing my name from the local press, and stepped aside.

Through the glass viewing window of Suite 412, the scene inside was chaotic. Grant was standing by the bedside, his face pale and slick with sweat, arguing aggressively with a doctor in blue scrubs. On the bed, Piper Vale—heavy with child, her face contorted in a mixture of pain and hysteria—was clutching a stuffed animal and sobbing hysterically.

"You said she was stable!" Grant shouted at the doctor. "Why are the police involved?"

"Mr. Ashford, we are required by state law to report positive toxicology screens during prenatal admissions," the doctor replied coldly, holding up a clipboard. "Miss Vale's blood work showed high levels of controlled substances that were never prescribed by her OB-GYN. Furthermore, our billing department flagged repeated wire transfers from an unregistered corporate entity tied to Ashford Hotels paying for her private care."

Grant froze. He turned his head toward the door, and his eyes locked onto mine through the glass.

For a terrifying second, his expression shifted from fear to pure, unadulterated hatred. He knew I had orchestrated this. Not the drugs, not the labor—but the exposure of the financial trail that led straight to his office.

I pushed the door open and stepped into the room.

"Vivienne," Grant choked out, taking a step toward me. "Thank God. You need to fix this. Tell them—tell the police that these accounts were authorized, that this is a misunderstanding—"

"I’m not telling them a damn thing, Grant," I said softly, stopping just a few feet away from him. I looked past him at Piper, who was glaring at me with venomous hatred despite her tears.

"You ruined everything," Piper spat, her voice cracking as another contraction wracked her body. "You were supposed to stay home and play the blind, stupid society wife! Grant was going to leave you after the baby was born. He told me you were hollow, that you only cared about your charity galas!"

Grant flinched, lunging toward the bed. "Shut up, Piper! Shut your mouth!"

"No, let her talk," I said, my voice completely steady. I pulled my own phone from my blazer pocket, hitting the record button. "Go on, Piper. Tell me all about the future you and my husband planned with my money."

Before Piper could answer, the heart monitor beside the bed emitted a sharp, continuous, high-pitched shriek.

The flatline tone echoed off the sterile walls.

The doctor spun around, throwing off his clipboard. "Code Blue! Crash cart in here, now!"

Nurses flooded through the doors, shoving Grant and me back against the wall. Amidst the shouting, the medical alarms, and the flurry of CPR compressions, a nurse ripped open Piper’s bedside drawer to grab emergency supplies.

As the drawer slid out, a manila folder fell to the floor, spilling its contents across my feet.

I looked down. Lying face up on the shiny floor was a certified marriage certificate.

Not between Piper and some random partner.
