Chapter 7 - Pier 42

The wind off the East River bit straight through my cashmere trench coat as I stepped out of the Uber at Pier 42. The old shipping docks were dark, deserted, and reeked of salt, diesel, and decaying wood. Overhead, industrial cranes stood like skeletal giants against the bruised midnight sky.
My phone vibrated in my pocket. I see you. Walk down to the third slip.
I didn't hesitate. I kept my hand firmly wrapped around the can of pepper spray tucked into my coat pocket, my heels clicking deliberately against the weathered concrete. The anonymous caller had promised answers about the missing baby, the Panama shell companies, and the deeper conspiracy that had turned my marriage into a facade.
At the end of the third slip, a lone figure leaned against a rusted shipping container, smoking a cigarette. The orange glow illuminated a sharp jawline, salt-and-pepper hair, and a bespoke tailored suit that looked entirely out of place in a maritime junkyard.
"You came," the man said, his voice deep and raspy. He flicked his cigarette into the dark water below.
"I don't like being played, and I certainly don't like anonymous phone calls," I said, stopping ten feet away. "Who are you, and what do you know about Grant?"
The man turned around slowly. In the dim light of a flickering overhead security bulb, I recognized him. It was Arthur Sterling—former senior managing director of Sterling Global Assets and Ashford Hotels' primary rival twenty years ago, before my father-in-law allegedly forced him out of the industry.
"Grant is a fool," Arthur said, a dry, humorless chuckle escaping his lips. "He thought he was the mastermind behind Ashford Hotels' international expansion. He thought those offshore accounts in Panama were his personal slush fund for his mistress."
"Weren't they?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.
"Not even close," Arthur stepped closer, his dark eyes flashing with malice. "Those accounts were funneling seed money for a hostile takeover of Ashford Hotels. And Grant didn't set them up. Piper did."
The words hung in the freezing air, heavy and unbelievable.
"Piper?" I repeated. "Piper Vale is a twenty-four-year-old marketing associate turned mistress."
"Piper Vale is Julian Vance's biological granddaughter," Arthur corrected me smoothly. "Her real name is Piper Vance. She was planted inside Ashford Hotels three years ago specifically to seduce your husband, entrap him in a bigamous marriage, and weaponize your family assets against the board."
My breath caught in my throat. Every piece of the puzzle violently shifted. The sudden affair, the apartment leases, the hospital admission, the frantic text messages—it wasn't a random betrayal. It was a corporate assassination plot orchestrated from inside the board.
"Why tell me this?" I asked, my voice dropping. "What do you gain?"
"I want the Ashford empire reduced to ash," Arthur smiled coldly. "And you, Vivienne... you’re the match. But you need to know one last thing. The baby didn't die at Saint Aurelia. Piper’s child was smuggled out of the maternity ward an hour before you arrived."
Before I could process the staggering revelation, the piercing wail of police sirens echoed across the pier. Red and blue strobe lights suddenly illuminated the dark warehouses, blinding us.
"Freeze! Federal agents! Put your hands where we can see them!" a bullhorn roared from the shadows.
May you like
Arthur smirked, taking a step backward toward the edge of the water. "Good luck, Vivienne. They’re coming for you next."
