Chapter 2 - The Lapel Pin

Margaret’s hand flew to her throat, her fingers brushing against her diamond necklace as if she were trying to verify she was still breathing. The haughty, untouchable veneer cracked right down the middle, revealing a flicker of raw, primal panic.

"What... what are you looking at?" Margaret stammered, her voice losing its polished composure for a fraction of a second before she caught herself.

I didn't answer. I slowly stood up from the edge of the bed, smoothing my skirt and squaring my shoulders. My height, combined with the rigid posture of a career officer, instantly towered over Brandon and Ethan.

The portfolio tucked under Brandon’s arm bore a distinct, embossed gold seal in the bottom right corner—the personal crest of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s regional white-collar crime division, specifically stamped Case File 44-B: Prescott Holdings Financial Audit.

"You brought a federal investigative document into a public hospital room," I said, my voice quiet, flat, and carrying the icy weight of a death sentence. "And you handed it to your brother to review before you even made sure my daughter’s concussion was treated. That is a fascinating level of arrogance, Brandon."

Brandon’s smile flickered, replaced by a sudden, nervous twitch in his jaw. He instinctively pulled the portfolio tighter against his ribs. "I don't know what you're talking about. This is just a personal binder. You're out of your jurisdiction, Colonel. This is civil."

"Civil?" I stepped closer, forcing Brandon to take an involuntary half-step backward toward the door. "When you confiscate a victim’s phone, lock her in a private outbuilding against her will, and coordinate with your brother to cover up domestic assault, it stops being a civil family dispute. It crosses neatly into federal kidnapping, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice."

Ethan scoffed, though a bead of sweat now glistened on his forehead. "You can't prove any of that. The guesthouse has private security cameras, and they were conveniently offline for maintenance today. Her word against ours, Colonel. Good luck with that in Mecklenburg County."

"Private security cameras," I repeated, a cold smile touching the corners of my lips. "Thank you for confirming the guesthouse has external coverage, Ethan. That will save the state prosecutors a subpoena."

Margaret finally recovered enough of her voice to hiss, "Ethan, shut your mouth." She glared at me, her eyes flashing with venom. "You think you can intimidate us with a bluff? My husband dines with the Chief of Police every Thursday. By tomorrow morning, you and your little daughter will be the ones answering to charges of trespassing and public disturbance."

"Your husband hasn't dined anywhere outside of federal custody since six o'clock this morning, Margaret," I said smoothly.

The room went dead silent. Even the rhythmic hum of the heart monitor seemed to fade into the background.

Ethan stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "What did you say?"

"You heard me," I replied, sliding my hands into my pockets. "While you were busy coordinating your cover story and threatening my daughter in this hospital room, federal marshals were executing search warrants on Prescott Holdings' downtown headquarters and freezing every personal and corporate account your family owns. Your father was picked up at his golf club thirty minutes ago."

Brandon violently shook his head. "That's a lie! You're bluffing! Mom, she's bluffing!"

"Am I?" I pulled my phone from my breast pocket, unlocked it with a single tap, and tossed it onto the hospital tray table right in front of them.

The screen was lit up with a live video feed from a secure news channel. The banner across the bottom scrolled in bold red letters: BREAKING: FEDERAL AUTHORITIES RAID PRESCOTT HOLDINGS HEADQUARTERS IN CHARLOTTE; CITING FRAUD AND RICO VIOLATIONS.

Ethan lunged forward to grab the phone, but before his fingers could brush the glass, the door to Room 304 swung open wide, and two men in dark suits flashed federal badges.

"Ethan Prescott?" the lead agent asked, his voice sharp and unyielding. "And Brandon Prescott? I have a warrant for your arrest."
