Chapter 8 - The Breach from Below

The shattering of reinforced glass echoed through the east wing like a gunshot as Richard slammed the brass candlestick into the windowpane, trying to clear the frame to escape toward the back gardens.
"Agent Hayes! Second-floor study!" I shouted, not taking my eyes off Richard for a single second.
Heavy boots thundered up the grand staircase, turning sharply down the corridor. Before Richard could haul his leg over the broken window sill, two federal agents burst through the study door, tackling him cleanly to the Persian rug with practiced efficiency.
"Richard Prescott, you have the right to remain silent," Agent Hayes barked as he slapped cold steel cuffs around Richard’s wrists, pinning him face-down against the floor. Hayes looked up, his eyes locking onto me and the open wall safe behind the desk. "Looks like you didn't wait twenty minutes, Colonel."
"If I had waited for your tech unit, Richard would have torched this entire wing," I replied steadily, tossing the brass paperweight back onto the desk.
Hayes stood up, dusting off his suit jacket, and walked over to inspect the contents of the safe. When his eyes landed on the autopsy report and the titanium hard drive, a low whistle escaped his lips.
"Well, well," Hayes murmured, picking up the municipal medical examiner’s document with a gloved hand. "Six years old. Filed under seal by a corrupt local magistrate. This isn't just financial fraud anymore, Colonel. This is a cold-case homicide and a systemic cover-up."
Richard writhed against the floorboards, spitting blood and dirt. "It's a forgery! She planted that! That's military intelligence psy-ops bullshit!"
"Shut him up and get him out of my sight," Hayes ordered the agents. They hoisted Richard up by his arms, dragging him out of the study and down the grand staircase as his furious curses echoed through the mansion.
Agent Hayes turned back to me, his expression a mix of professional respect and deep gravity. "Colonel Hart, what else is on this hard drive?"
"Everything," I said, handing him the titanium drive. "Every offshore wire transfer, every corrupt municipal contract, and every victim compliance log the Prescott family has maintained for the last decade."
Emily stood quietly near the doorway, her hands clasped tightly together, staring down at the floor where Richard had just been pinned. The reality of what she had narrowly escaped—what another young woman six years ago had not escaped—was settling over her with suffocating weight.
I crossed the room, pulling her into my arms and resting my chin against her hair. "You're safe now, Em. It's over. They're all going down."
"It's not over yet, Mom," Emily whispered, her voice choked with tears as she looked up at me. "Margaret is still out there. She posted bail hours ago."
My jaw tightened. I looked back at Agent Hayes. "Where is Margaret Prescott right now?"
Hayes checked his phone, his face hardening. "Her legal team filed an emergency medical furlough bond an hour ago. She’s currently at her private estate in the Blue Ridge Mountains under house arrest, pending the federal arraignment."
May you like
"House arrest," I repeated, a cold, humorless smile touching my lips. "Not for long."
