Chapter 7 - The Safehouse Protocol

The damp, metallic air of the abandoned stormwater drainage tunnel burned my lungs as General Vance and I pressed our backs against the curved concrete wall, listening intently for the sound of pursuing boots above us.

"They've lost our thermal signature in the runoff pipes," General Vance whispered, wiping blood from his forehead with the sleeve of his dress shirt. He pulled a secure, offline satellite communicator from his inner pocket, punching in a rapid sequence of override codes. "If Apex controls the federal satellite feeds, our standard military channels are completely fried. We have to route through an independent relay."

I kept my rifle raised toward the dark mouth of the tunnel where faint city lights filtered through the grating. "Who can we trust, General? If Apex infiltrated the defense contractor network, half the Pentagon command structure could be compromised."

"Not everyone," a familiar, raspy voice echoed from the deeper shadows of the drainage pipe.

I spun around, my finger tightening on the trigger, before lowering the barrel as a tall figure stepped into the dim amber light filtering from an overhead vent. It wasn't an Apex mercenary. It was retired Colonel Thomas Sterling—Arthur Sterling’s estranged older brother and the former head of military intelligence audit.

"Colonel Sterling," General Vance muttered, lowering his weapon with a mixture of relief and caution. "I thought you were off the grid in Geneva."

"I was, until my secure server lit up with an emergency flash-traffic alert originating from a rogue tactical team attacking a decorated Staff Sergeant in downtown D.C.," Sterling replied, walking forward with a steady, unhurried stride. He looked at me, his eyes softening with deep respect. "Good to see you standing, Sergeant Parker. Your grandfather would be proud of how you handled that ambush."

"Save the praise, Colonel," I said bluntly, lowering my rifle safety. "We have a data core containing billion-dollar kickbacks tied to Apex Logistics, and every corporate assassin in the district is hunting us. Where do we go?"

May you like

Sterling offered a grim, knowing smile, pulling a set of heavy brass keys from his pocket. "We go underground. My family built a secure data archive beneath the old naval yards thirty years ago—completely air-gapped from federal networks. If you want to take down Julian Vance and his syndicate, that's where we build the trap."
