Chapter 8 - The Ghost Archive

The heavy iron door of the naval yard archive swung inward with a low, hydraulic groan, revealing a vast subterranean room illuminated by rows of glowing cathode-ray terminals and high-capacity mainframes. It looked like a relic of the Cold War, untouched by modern cloud networks or corporate surveillance architecture.

"Completely isolated from the grid," Colonel Sterling explained, tossing his jacket onto a metal chair and firing up the master terminal. "No internet connection, no cellular ping, no fiber-optic backdoor for Apex to hack. Whatever data you pulled from Operation Crimson Horizon, plug it in here."

I stepped forward, pulling the encrypted flash drive from my tactical vest and sliding it directly into the vintage mainframe port. The screen flickered violently as lines of green text cascaded across the monitor, unpacking gigabytes of classified mission logs, financial spreadsheets, and recorded wire transfers.

General Vance leaned over the terminal, his eyes scanning the fast-moving data streams. "My God... look at these routing numbers. These aren't just defense kickbacks. These accounts belong to sitting members of the Senate Armed Services Committee."

"And look at the primary signature authorizing the offshore shell companies," I added, pointing a finger at a highlighted corporate seal near the bottom of the ledger. "Marcus Sterling. Arthur Sterling's cousin. The same corporate attorney who drafted the Morales family trusts and locked down Sebastian Ross's tech empire in Chicago."

The room went dead silent. Colonel Sterling stared at the screen, his face hardening into an expression of cold, generational fury.

"My cousin Marcus," Sterling whispered, his voice dangerously low. "For twenty years, he claimed he left the family business to practice independent corporate law. He’s been laundering illicit defense capital through international trusts to fund the Vances' private security army."

"Which means the corruption isn't just a military oversight," I said, standing up straight and resting my hands on the edge of the steel console. "It’s an interconnected syndicate spanning defense contractors, corporate conglomerates, and international cartels. And they've spent years covering their tracks by ruining anyone who gets too close."

"Including your family," General Vance added quietly, looking over at me. "Your father and your brother... they think corporate status and boardroom power insulate them from this world. But once Apex finishes wiping out your former squad, they'll come for your family's assets to cover their liabilities."

A cold knot tightened in my stomach. Despite how my family had treated me, despite their mockery and disdain, the thought of them walking blindly into the crosshairs of an international syndicate made my blood run cold.

"We need to warn them," I said, reaching for my secure satellite phone.

Before my finger could hit the dial key, the master terminal’s emergency alarm shrieked loudly, flashing a stark, blinking red warning across every monitor in the subterranean room.
