Chapter 10 - Beneath the Foundation

The glowing screen of my phone cast a harsh, unnatural light across the quiet kitchen as I zoomed in closer on the historical municipal survey map. The unrecorded easement was explicit: the subterranean vault system beneath my cliffside deck wasn't a standard crawl space or a forgotten septic runoff. It was a massive, reinforced concrete bunker complex built during the Prohibition era, later repurposed in the nineteen-seventies as a commercial maritime logistics hub.

And according to the corporate succession clause at the bottom of the faded document, ownership of that underground vault had automatically reverted to the primary surviving corporate entity of Drexler Holdings the moment the residential title was subdivided twenty years ago.

Which meant that while I owned the pale floors, the wide glass windows, and the stunning ocean view above ground, Marcus and his family technically held the deed to the multi-million-dollar commercial vault system buried directly beneath my feet.

It was their final, invisible anchor on my property. A hidden trump card they didn't even know they possessed yet.

My mind raced. If Eleanor or Marcus discovered this clause before the bankruptcy court liquidated their corporate assets, they could file an emergency commercial access petition, legally forcing their way back onto my property under the guise of maritime infrastructure management.

I couldn't let that happen. Not after I had finally reclaimed my peace.

I grabbed my heavy-duty tactical flashlight from the hallway closet, slipped my keys into my pocket, and unlocked the heavy glass sliding door leading down to the exterior cliffside deck.

The night air was cool and thick with sea mist. The rhythmic crashing of the waves echoed loudly against the rock face below.

I walked past the outdoor dining table and knelt beside a discreet, weather-beaten wooden hatch built flush into the wooden decking near the edge of the cliff—a hatch Marcus had always told me was just an old, non-functional utility box for pool drainage.

I pulled out my keys, finding the small brass master key that had come in a neglected velvet pouch inside the home purchase binder three weeks ago.

I slid the key into the heavy, rusted padlock securing the wooden hatch.

It turned with a loud, metallic click.

I heaved the heavy wooden lid upward. It swung open with a dry groan, releasing a gust of damp, stagnant air mixed with the unmistakable scent of old paper, rusted iron, and decades of absolute secrecy.

I flicked on my flashlight, aiming the brilliant beam down into the dark, vertical concrete shaft.

Stretching down into the earth was a rusted steel ladder, disappearing into a massive, cavernous chamber directly beneath the bedrock of my Malibu estate.

And right there at the bottom of the ladder, illuminated by the beam of my light, sat a row of heavy, fireproof filing cabinets—bearing the stamped corporate seal of Drexler Holdings, and a handwritten label across the top drawer that made my blood run instantly cold: Project Pacific - Hidden Asset Ledger & Shoreline Title Monopoly.

They hadn't just built an empire on quicksand. They had hidden their ultimate escape hatch directly beneath my home.

And as I gripped the cold metal rungs of the ladder, preparing to descend into the dark, my phone buzzed in my back pocket with an incoming text from Arthur Vance:

“Emergency update, Josephine. Marcus just filed an emergency bankruptcy motion claiming commercial subterranean rights to your Malibu property address. He’s coming for the house.”
