Chapter 9 - The Final Audit

The sun was dipping back toward the ocean, casting long amber beams across the living room floor when my phone rang.
This time, it wasn't an angry relative or a desperate ex-husband. It was Arthur Vance.
“Josephine,” Arthur said, his tone brisk and professional, though a hint of professional satisfaction underscored his words. “We just received a formal settlement proposal from Marcus’s independent divorce counsel.”
I leaned back against the kitchen counter, taking a slow sip of water. “Let me guess. They want to walk away clean without facing criminal prosecution for the forged subsidiary resolution?”
“Not quite,” Arthur chuckled softly. “Marcus is essentially offering to sign an immediate, uncontested default divorce decree, waiving all claims to your separate property, your LLC holdings, and any future financial support. In exchange, he’s begging us to intervene with Apex Capital so they don't throw him and his mother out of their suburban family home in Pasadena.”
I looked out the wide glass windows toward the endless expanse of the Pacific Ocean. For fifteen years, Marcus had hidden behind his mother’s apron strings, letting his family diminish my worth, steal my time, and dictate the terms of my life. Now, the empire they had built on quicksand had completely collapsed, leaving them begging a divorced woman for mercy.
“Tell Marcus I accept the default divorce terms,” I said calmly.
“And the house in Pasadena?” Arthur asked. “Do we intervene with the lenders?”
“No,” I replied firmly. “Let the market decide what their family home is worth. They wanted to play high-stakes corporate games with forged assets? They can live with the consequences.”
“Understood. I’ll file the default paperwork with the superior court tomorrow morning,” Arthur said. “Enjoy your evening, Josephine. You’ve officially won.”
The call disconnected with a soft click.
I set the phone down on the counter and walked out onto the deck. The evening air was cool and crisp, carrying the clean scent of salt and freedom. For the first time in my adult life, I wasn't looking over my shoulder. I wasn't waiting for the next critique, the next hidden demand, or the next family ambush.
The house was mine. The silence was mine. The future was entirely unwritten.
I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with the ocean breeze, feeling the last lingering ghost of my old life finally dissolve into the tide.
Then my phone buzzed one last time on the counter inside.
I walked back in, glancing down at the screen, expecting a confirmation email from Arthur’s legal clerk.
Instead, it was a notification from the Malibu municipal property records office, alerting me to an unrecorded historical easement attached to the cliffside land directly beneath my deck—a legal document dating back to the 1920s that revealed a startling, hidden truth about the very foundation my house was built upon.
My heart skipped a beat as I tapped open the scanned municipal survey map.
The cliffside didn't just overlook the ocean. Directly beneath the foundation pillars sat an abandoned, commercially zoned subterranean vault system—one that had been legally deeded not to the previous residential owners, but exclusively to the defunct corporate entity once controlled by Marcus’s late father.

And according to the active property tax ledger, whoever controlled that subterranean vault legally controlled the entire commercial shoreline access for the entire Malibu cove.
