Chapter 1 - The Weight of Silver

The small silver key caught the pale moonlight filtering through the French doors, casting a cold glint across the polished floorboards.

Dominic Kane’s gaze did not waver. For two years, that exact pattern of grooved steel had haunted his nightmares—the key to the secondary override panel of his private vault, missing since the rainy October night his sedan was riddled with rifle fire. And now, it lay partially concealed beneath Emma Harper’s chapped fingers, resting against his leg as if she had carried it there with casual familiarity.

Ethan Ward watched his boss closely, his hand hovering near the pocket of his tailored jacket where a silenced Glock rested. The quiet warmth that had flickered in Dominic’s eyes just moments before was entirely gone, replaced by the lethal, calculating stillness that had made empires bow to him across Harbor City.

“Wake her up,” Ethan whispered, stepping forward with cautious urgency.

“No,” Dominic replied, his voice dropping into a register so low it barely carried across the room.

“Dominic, she’s sleeping with a piece of the puzzle that almost put you in a pine box. If she’s an operative—”

“If she were an operative,” Dominic interrupted, his eyes narrowing as he studied the steady, exhausted rise and fall of Emma’s chest, “she wouldn't have fallen asleep from sheer physical exhaustion while holding it. Pros don't collapse. They execute.”

“Then explain the terminal login from the east wing eleven minutes after she walked through the security gates,” Ethan countered, tapping the glowing screen of his tablet. “The timing is too precise. The theft at Pier Nine was a diversion. Someone wanted our attention focused on the shipping manifests while they fished around the old archives.”

Dominic reached down with his right hand, his fingers stopping mere millimeters from Emma’s wrist. For a fraction of a second, he hesitated. The exhaustion on her face wasn't fake; the swelling in her knee was real. He knew what physical pain looked like—he lived inside it every single day. Yet, the presence of the key could not be dismissed as a coincidence. Coincidences in Dominic’s world were just poorly planned assassinations.

With agonizing slowness, Dominic slid two fingers beneath the silver key, lifting it free from her grasp without waking her.

The moment the metal left her hand, Emma stirred. A soft murmur escaped her lips, her head shifting against his thigh as she sought the vanished warmth.

Dominic froze, holding the key in his palm.

“What do you want me to do with her?” Ethan asked, his jaw tightening. “Do we lock her in the holding room downstairs until she talks?”

May you like

Dominic closed his fist around the key, the sharp edges biting into his palm. A cold, dangerous smile touched the corner of his mouth.

“No,” Dominic said quietly, looking back down at the sleeping woman. “Let her finish her shift. Let’s see what else she unlocks.”
