Chapter 3 - The Ghost Manifest

"You think I wanted this?" I hissed back, my voice shaking with a sudden, violent surge of adrenaline. I shoved my chest against his, not caring about rank, reputation, or the silver stars on his collar. "You think I woke up five years ago wanting to be erased? I didn't choose to be listed as a casualty, Ethan. Your command did that to protect a failed op!"

Ethan didn't flinch. He absorbed my fury like a stone wall, his eyes searching my face for any sign of deception.

"The official after-action report stated the safehouse was completely compromised by insurgent forces," Ethan said, his voice dangerously low. "There were no survivors. The identities of everyone in that unit were sealed under a Class-A Pentagon directive signed by the Joint Chiefs."

"And yet, here I am," I retorted bitterly, pulling my sleeve up again to expose the dark, jagged ink mark. "Alive, breathing, and spending my Friday nights serving lukewarm chardonnay to men who think military service is a cocktail party conversation."

Before Ethan could answer, the crunch of gravel echoed nearby.

"Claire? Ethan?"

It was Ryan’s voice, carrying a sharp, suspicious edge as he rounded the corner of the hedge, his polished military shoes gleaming in the moonlight. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw how close we were standing, his eyes darting between my exposed forearm and Ethan’s rigid posture.

"Is there a problem here?" Ryan asked, squaring his shoulders, trying desperately to recapture the authority of a returning captain. "Because if my sister is causing some kind of issue—"

"Shut up, Ryan," Ethan said without even turning his head.

Ryan’s face darkened with insulted pride. "Excuse me? That is my family you're talking to. I served three tours in the Pacific, and I won't stand here and watch a superior officer—"

"Your service is a footnote, Captain," Ethan interrupted coldly, finally turning his piercing gaze onto Ryan. "And if you had a fraction of the operational awareness your sister possessed before she was twenty-one, you’d realize you're standing in a house full of people who have no idea who—or what—is actually living under their roof."

Ryan scoffed, taking a step forward. "What are you talking about? She’s just Claire. She handles the paperwork, she runs errands, she—"

"She’s a ghost on a classified kill-switch list," Ethan cut him off, his voice ringing with absolute, chilling finality.

Ryan froze. The color drained from his face as he looked at me, not with brotherly affection, but with sudden, creeping dread.

"What did you say?" Ryan whispered.
