Chapter 4 - Collateral Damage

Before Ryan could demand another answer, the heavy glass doors of the back patio slid open with a sharp clatter.

Dad stepped out into the yard, flanked by two retired generals who looked distinctly uncomfortable. The festive atmosphere of the party had completely dissolved, replaced by an oppressive, tense vacuum.

"Ethan," Dad said, his voice tight with controlled fury. "I think it’s time you stepped back inside. You’re upsetting my daughter, and your erratic behavior is crossing a line."

"Your daughter isn't upset, Arthur," Ethan replied smoothly, turning to face my father with an expression of pure, unadulterated contempt. "She’s just realizing that the family she’s spent the last five years protecting has no idea how close they are to a federal crossfire."

Dad’s face went rigid. "Watch your tone. I spent thirty years in uniform building this name, this home, and this family. I won't have a disgraced field commander come into my yard and—"

"Disgraced?" Ethan let out a short, humorless laugh that sounded like shards of glass. "Arthur, do you honestly think the Pentagon retired me because of a knee injury? I was investigating the intelligence leak that blew Sector Four wide open in 2021. The same leak that got your precious daughter’s unit slaughtered."

I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth. The air rushed out of my lungs.

"What did you say?" I choked out, staring at Ethan. "Sector Four wasn't an insurgent ambush?"

Ethan looked at me, a flicker of genuine regret crossing his hardened features for the first time. "No, Claire. It was an inside job. And the data trail pointing directly to the leak leads straight back to Washington."

Dad stepped back, stumbling slightly against the edge of the patio planter, his face turning the color of ash. "You’re... you’re out of your mind."

"Am I?" Ethan stepped past Ryan, closing the distance to my father until they were nose-to-nose. "Then why did your bank accounts in the Caymans receive three wire transfers from a defense subcontractor forty-eight hours after Claire's unit went dark?"

Silence dropped over the yard like a guillotine.

Ryan stared at our father in absolute horror. "Dad? What is he talking about?"
