Chapter 10 - The Road to Bakersfield

The tires of my sedan hummed against the dark, asphalt ribbon of Interstate 5 as I sped south toward Bakersfield through the pitch-black California night.
The dashboard clock glowed 2:15 AM.
Walter’s text message with the safe combination sat securely on my phone screen beside a digital map showing my distance to the rural outskirts of Kern County: one hundred and twenty miles.
Behind me, my apartment in Sacramento was already locked up, stripped of my pride, but fueled by a cold, burning determination that I hadn't known I possessed. Justin and Elena thought they had engineered the perfect corporate and marital execution. They thought I would curl up in a corner, sign the fraudulent separation papers, and let them walk away with everything I had worked for.
They didn't know who they were dealing with anymore.
As the miles ticked away, the sprawling city lights of Sacramento faded into the vast, open expanse of the Central Valley farmland, dotted with dark orchards and sleeping farmhouses under a blanket of cold stars.
My phone buzzed violently on the passenger seat, breaking the silence of the cabin.
I glanced down. It was a call from an unknown, restricted number.
I hit speakerphone and answered immediately, keeping my eyes fixed on the empty highway ahead.
“You’re making a monumental mistake driving down to Bakersfield, Chloe,” Elena Vance’s voice purred through the car speakers, sounding remarkably calm for someone whose entire scheme was hanging by a thread. “Justin already checked the cabin security logs. We know Walter leaked the combination.”
“Tell Justin he can keep his clothes,” I said, pressing my foot harder against the accelerator, the engine roaring in response. “Because by the time the sun comes up, I’m going to have every single financial record, ledger, and transfer key in my possession—and I’ll be handing them directly to the federal prosecutor handling West Enterprises' corporate fraud division.”
A sharp intake of breath hissed through the phone line, the smug confidence instantly vanishing from Elena’s voice.
“You wouldn't dare,” she snapped.
May you like
“Try me,” I whispered.
I tapped the screen, disconnecting the call, and threw the phone onto the passenger seat. Ahead of me, the highway stretched out into the dark horizon, leading straight toward the showdown waiting at the Bakersfield cabin.
