Chapter 9 - The Unlikely Ally

The hum of the refrigerator felt like a taunting reminder of the life that had just been systematically dismantled around me.

Monday morning was less than thirty-six hours away, and according to Elena’s legal trap, I was about to be legally locked out of my own home, branded as unstable, and left penniless while my husband skipped town with his former fiancée and our entire life savings.

I sat on the edge of the living room sofa, staring down at the glowing screen of my laptop. The legal documents Justin had filed were real—stamped with a digital court seal, citing mental distress and hostile domestic conduct, heavily citing Virginia’s witness testimony about the kitchen arguments and Brenda’s lunch inspection.

They had planned this from the very beginning. Virginia’s move into our apartment wasn't for medical tests; it was a reconnaissance mission to gather legal ammunition, provoke a reaction, and paint me as the unhinged wife who drove her family away.

My phone buzzed on the coffee table.

I picked it up, expecting another taunting message from Elena or a cold text from Justin. Instead, it was an incoming call from a number with a Bakersfield area code.

Frowning, I swiped to answer.

“Hello?” I said, my voice sharp and guarded.

“Chloe? Is that you, dear?”

A wave of absolute shock washed over me. It was Walter. Justin’s father.

“Walter?” I said, sitting up straight on the sofa. “Why are you calling me? Did Justin put you up to this?”

“No, no, child,” Walter’s voice sounded raspy, tired, and deeply troubled. “Justin isn't even in the room right now. He left the hotel an hour ago to meet with some woman downtown. I took his phone while he was in the shower.”

I held my breath. “Walter, what are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about a damned disgrace,” Walter said, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed anger. “Virginia and I... we didn't come up here for medical appointments, Chloe. Well, maybe a minor checkup, but that wasn't the real reason. Justin flew us out here, paid for our hotel, and asked us to help him... to help him push you to the breaking point.”

The room seemed to spin slightly. “He asked you to do that?”

“He told us you were standing in the way of a major financial investment he needed to make with an old partner,” Walter confessed, a heavy sigh whistling through the phone line. “He said if we came and criticized your housekeeping, made things uncomfortable, you’d eventually snap and ask us to leave. Once you did, he’d have the legal leverage he needed to separate your assets without a messy trial.”

I stared blankly at the wall, the final pieces of the puzzle clicking violently into place.

“Why are you telling me this, Walter?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “You’re his father.”

“Because there’s a difference between being a father and being a crook, Chloe,” Walter said firmly. “And what Justin and that woman are doing to you crosses a line I won't stand for. More importantly... I know where they’re keeping the physical hard drives and the backup account keys. Justin left them in the floor safe of our old family cabin down in Bakersfield before we came up here.”

My eyes widened in the dark. “A safe in Bakersfield?”

May you like

“If you want to stop them before they board a flight to Seattle tomorrow morning,” Walter said, “you need to get down to that cabin tonight. I’ll text you the combination.”
