Chapter 5 - The Weight of the Bloodline

Luca’s breath hitched. It was the only sign of vulnerability he showed—a fractional widening of his dark eyes, a sudden tightening of the jawline as he took in the two small figures standing down the hall.
His gaze snapped back to my face, burning with a mix of absolute fury and a raw, agonizing disbelief.
"Six years," Luca said, his voice dropping to a low, vibrating growl that barely carried over the hum of the hallway light. "Six years I spent tearing this country apart looking for the ghost of you. And all the while, you were hiding right under my nose with..."
He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't have to.
He stepped forward, pushing the door open wider with the palm of his hand, ignoring the heavy iron deadbolt entirely. I didn't try to stop him. I couldn't. The sheer gravitational pull of his presence filled the small apartment, crowding out the air.
"You shouldn't have come here, Luca," I said, my voice shaking, though I forced myself to stand tall, putting my body between him and the children. "You found us. Fine. Are you going to kill me now? Is that why you brought Vincenzo?"
Luca stopped dead in his tracks. A dark, bewildered frown cut across his forehead. "Kill you? Vivien, what the hell are you talking about?"
"I saw you!" I snapped, the dam breaking after six years of silent terror, the tears finally spilling over my lashes. "That night in your office! The man on the floor! I saw what you did, Luca! I saw how cold you were, how easy it was for you to snuff out a life like it was nothing!"
Luca stared at me, his face freezing into absolute shock. For a moment, he looked completely lost, as if he couldn't connect the words I was saying to the reality in front of him.
Then, a dark, heavy understanding washed over his features.
"You ran... because of what you saw in my office that night?" he whispered, his voice cracking with a raw, unexpected agony.
"How could I not?!" I sobbed, my hands trembling. "You were a monster!"
Before Luca could answer, a heavy, metallic click echoed from the bottom of the apartment stairs outside our door.
We both froze.
Heavy, hurried boots began ascending the concrete steps three at a time. Not Luca’s men.

Luca’s head snapped toward the stairwell door, his dark eyes instantly sharpening into pure, lethal focus. He reached inside his coat, drawing a heavy, silenced pistol with terrifying speed, and shoved me backward into the hallway.
"Get the kids into the back room," Luca ordered, his voice dropping into the absolute authority of a warlord preparing for war. "Someone tracked my tail. They're here for all of us."
