Chapter 10 - The Siege at Dawn

“Freeze! Federal agents!”

Three armed military police officers and two civilian DOJ special agents in tactical vests swarmed into the server vault, their weapons raised, moving with professional, overwhelming force.

Victoria dropped her arms, the master drive slipping from her trembling fingers and clattering onto the concrete floor with a hollow, metallic ring.

“Secure the suspect,” General Hayes ordered, stepping into the doorway behind the agents with his jaw set in stone.

Two agents moved in instantly, grabbing Victoria by the arms and spinning her around against the server rack, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists with a sharp, echoing snap.

“You can't do this to me!” Victoria screamed, her aristocratic composure completely shattering as she was hauled toward the exit. “Do you know who my family is? Do you know who my husband is? I demand my attorney! I demand—!”

Her voice faded down the concrete corridor as the agents dragged her out into the cold dawn air where the federal transport vans were waiting.

I lowered my weapon, holstered it slowly, and exhaled a long, shuddering breath. The adrenaline drain hit me all at once, making my shoulders feel as though they were carrying lead weights.

General Hayes stepped into the room, looking down at the discarded master drive on the floor before lifting his gaze to mine.

“Well, Director,” the General said quietly. “It appears your unannounced inspection was even more thorough than anticipated.”

“It’s not over, General,” I replied, looking toward the shattered doorway where the first pale rays of morning sunlight were beginning to paint the Virginia sky in shades of bruised purple and gold. “The financial trail doesn't stop with Victoria. The corporate shell companies lead straight to the private defense contractors operating out of the Colorado canyons.”

Before Hayes could answer, my secure terminal beeped in my coat pocket.

I pulled it out. It wasn't an internal Pentagon alert. It was a high-priority, encrypted satellite transmission routed directly from an unknown relay in the Rocky Mountains.
