Chapter 9 - The Mother-in-Law’s Confession

Victoria Whitmore sat in the center of the illuminated server room, her elegant emerald silk gown ruined by grease and dust, her hair falling out of its elaborate updo in wild strands around her face.
She wasn't holding a gun. She was holding a physical solid-state master drive, frantically pulling it out of the primary tactical mainframe as warning alarms trilled softly overhead.
When she heard the click of my boots on the concrete floor, she froze.
Slowly, Victoria turned her head. Her eyes, usually hard and dripping with condescension, were wide, bloodshot, and filled with a wild, cornered panic.
“Sandra,” she breathed, her voice trembling violently. “You... you shouldn't be here. This is... this is classified.”
“You’ve been quoting classification protocols to everyone else for years, Victoria,” I said, keeping my weapon steady, aimed squarely at the floor two feet in front of her shoes. “Turns out you were the one selling the secrets.”
Victoria let out a dry, frantic laugh, clutching the master drive against her chest as if it were a shield. “Selling secrets? Oh, please. Don't be so dramatic, darling. I’m a patriot. I helped fund the modernization of this country’s defense infrastructure when Congress was too gutless to approve the budgets.”
“You laundered millions in illicit corporate kickbacks through dummy housing trusts while your son played soldier and your husband looked the other way,” I countered, my voice absolute and unyielding. “And tonight, when your little game fell apart at a dinner table, you tried to burn the evidence.”
Victoria stood up slowly, her knees shaking under the weight of her silk gown. The mask of untouchable aristocracy was entirely gone, replaced by the desperate cunning of a criminal caught in the act.
“You think arresting me solves anything?” Victoria hissed, stepping forward, her eyes narrowing with malice. “You think the Department of Justice wants a public scandal involving a three-star family and a Pentagon director? If I go down, Sandra, I’m taking Daniel’s career with me. I’m taking your husband’s uniform, his pension, his honor, and his entire future down into the dirt right beside me.”
I didn't flinch. I didn't lower my weapon.
“Daniel’s career was already built on a foundation of lies, Victoria,” I said quietly. “He can rebuild his life—or he can face the consequences of the family he chose to protect over the truth. But you?”
I took two steps forward, closing the distance between us until the barrel of my sidearm was inches from her eye line.

“Your career of arrogance is officially over.”
Before Victoria could raise the drive to smash it against the concrete floor, heavy footsteps thundered down the hallway behind me.
