Chapter 10 - The Subterranean Outpost

The heavy steel bulkhead slammed shut overhead, plunging the underground bunker into an amber-lit emergency glow. The air down here smelled of ozone, dry earth, and recirculated battery power. Rows of glowing computer monitors, encrypted communication arrays, and emergency supply crates lined the concrete walls—a hidden sanctuary built for a war I never knew we were fighting.

Ethan buried his face in my jacket, trembling from the shock of the blast above, while David worked furiously at the primary terminal, punching in a rapid sequence of override codes to secure the bunker's blast doors.

"They're outside," David said, his voice grim as he watched the external security feeds flicker to life on the central monitor.

On the screen, three heavy tactical operatives in unmarked matte-black armor were swarming the remains of our kitchen, their weapons sweeping the ruined floorboards where we had been standing only moments before.

Vance stood beside David, sliding a fresh magazine into his sidearm. "They know we're in the sub-structure. They'll try to cut the main power grid and flood the ventilation shafts."

"Let them try," David replied coldly, a dangerous, calculating glint flashing in his eyes. He reached out and pressed a red master-activation toggle on the console. "I left a little parting gift in the main circuit breaker upstairs. The moment they touch the utility box, this whole facility goes completely off the grid."

BOOM!

A muffled secondary explosion echoed through the concrete ceiling, followed immediately by total darkness on the monitor screens as the enemy's thermal optics flickered and died.

David turned away from the console, walking slowly toward where Ethan and I stood in the dim amber light. He stopped a few feet away, kneeling down so he was eye-level with our son, before slowly lifting his gaze to meet mine.

"We're safe for the next hour," David said softly, his voice steady and resolute. "And then, we go on the offensive."
