Chapter 6 - The Man in the Smoke

The acrid scent of cordite burned the back of my throat as the haze from the shattered kitchen slider billowed inward. Through the grey smog, the silhouette of the tactical operative loomed large, his rifle barrel leveled with terrifying precision. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs, echoing the frantic thumping of Ethan’s small body pressed tightly against my side behind the heavy oak table.

Agent Vance didn't flinch. Instead of raising his weapon to fire, his posture shifted into something rigid and unnatural. His grip on the Sig Sauer loosened by a fraction—not out of fear, but out of absolute, stunned recognition.

"Drop the weapon," the operative commanded, his voice muffled by the comms filter of his combat helmet. It was deep, gravelly, and entirely stripped of any casual warmth. Yet, beneath the distortion, there was a familiar timber that sent a sudden, electric shock straight down my spine.

"You're late, David," Vance said calmly, lowering his pistol entirely and letting it hang by his side.

My breath caught in my throat. The world around me seemed to freeze, the sound of distant sirens and burning insulation fading into a distant hum. David? The man standing in the smoke, holding a high-caliber carbine and wearing the armor of the very syndicate hunting us—he was supposed to be resting beneath three years of cold cemetery dirt.

Before I could process the words, the operative reached up with his gloved hand and released the side latches of his tactical helmet. He lifted it off, shaking free a mop of dark hair threaded with silver at the temples, revealing the sharp jawline, the piercing eyes, and the small scar across his left eyebrow that I had traced a thousand times in the dark.

David Miller looked right past Vance, his gaze locking instantly onto me and our terrified son.
