Chapter 5 - The Parking Lot Shadows

The crisp afternoon air hit my face like cold water as Anna and I stepped out of the Roanoke County Courthouse doors and walked down the wide stone steps.

The Armani suit, the pearl earrings, and the row of expensive lawyers were nowhere to be seen. Evelyn had slipped out through the side exit, fleeing before the reporters could catch wind of the federal audit findings fluttering through the public docket.

Anna let out a long, ragged breath, her shoulders finally dropping from around her ears.

"I can't believe it," she whispered, looking up at me as we reached our battered station wagon in the parking lot. "For two years, Grandma made us feel like we were squatters in our own lives. She treated Dad like he was her property, not your husband."

I unlocked the passenger door for her, tossing my leather purse onto the front seat.

"People who build their lives on control are always terrified of losing it, Anna," I said gently, sliding behind the steering wheel and turning the ignition. The old engine coughed twice before catching with a familiar rumble.

We drove out of the courthouse lot, heading north toward the mountain highway that led to Smith Mountain Lake.

The sun was beginning to dip below the ridge, casting long, golden shadows across the winding asphalt. For the first time in twenty-one months, the weight on my chest felt lighter. The house would be ours. The memories Frank and I had built on that porch wouldn't be overwritten by his mother's greed.

My phone buzzed in the center console.

I glanced down at the screen while waiting at a red light. It wasn't a text from a friend or a reminder from the bookstore.

It was an encrypted notification from a secure government server—a priority ping from a secure routing protocol I hadn't opened since I left Stuttgart.

I pulled over onto the shoulder of the empty highway before tapping the screen to decrypt the message.
