Chapter 5 - The Predator’s Gambit

The courtroom seemed to drop ten degrees. Judge Thomas, a weary-looking man with half-moon spectacles perched on his nose, peered down from the elevated bench, looking from Richard’s stunned expression to Vincent’s imposing stance.

“Mr. Miller,” Judge Thomas said, his voice dry and authoritative. “Is there a problem with the defense counsel’s new representation?”

Richard found his voice, though it squeaked with sudden, panicked desperation. “Your honor, this—this is a sham! He’s... he’s some high-roller criminal! Everyone in the city knows who Vincent Romano is! He can't just waltz in here and buy a family overnight!”

A collective gasp rippled through the gallery.

Up on the bench, Judge Thomas stiffened. He adjusted his glasses, staring down at Vincent with a severe, questioning scowl. “Mr. Romano, the gentleman has a point. Your reputation in this city is well-documented, and family court requires established domestic stability, not a sudden, eleventh-hour marriage of convenience.”

Harper’s heart slammed against her ribs. She looked up at Vincent, terrified that his carefully constructed alibi was about to collapse under the harsh light of judicial scrutiny.

If Judge Thomas rejected the marriage, Richard would win. Lily would be gone.

Vincent didn't flinch. He didn't even blink. He stepped forward, releasing Harper’s waist and placing both hands flat on the wooden railing of the gallery, projecting absolute, unshakable confidence.

“Your honor,” Vincent began, his voice deep, smooth, and laced with quiet authority. “My reputation is a matter of public speculation and unproven media sensationalism. But my tax returns, my real estate holdings, my charitable foundations, and my marital status are matters of public record. I own a six-bedroom estate in the historical district. I employ a full-time domestic staff. And my wife—whom I deeply cherish—wishes nothing more than to provide a safe, stable home for her younger sister.”

He paused, turning his head slightly to look down at Harper with an expression so intensely convincing, so disturbingly tender, that she momentarily forgot how to breathe.

“We have been privately courting for over a year,” Vincent lied with terrifying, flawless conviction, his thumb gently brushing against her bare shoulder. “The wedding was private due to security concerns regarding my business interests. But make no mistake, Your Honor. My wife’s family is my family now. And anyone who attempts to exploit them will have to answer directly to me.”

Richard shrank back into his bench, trembling visibly under Vincent’s cold, unblinking glare.

Judge Thomas leaned back in his leather chair, stroking his chin as he weighed the legal implications of challenging a billionaire’s heavily documented marriage license in open court.

“Well,” Judge Thomas said slowly, picking up his gavel. “The paperwork appears to be entirely in order.”

Before the judge could deliver his final ruling, the heavy wooden doors at the back of the courtroom burst open with a loud bang, and a panicked court bailiff rushed down the center aisle, whispering something urgent into Judge Thomas’s ear.

The judge’s face went completely white. He dropped his gavel, looked directly at Vincent, and said, “Mr. Romano... federal agents are downstairs with an emergency warrant.”
