Chapter 9 - The Waitress’s Gamble

The courtroom went dead silent. Even the federal agents stopped moving, turning their attention to the small, elegant woman standing beside the accused mafia boss.

Judge Thomas adjusted his spectacles, his expression softening slightly with professional pity. "Child, you are under no obligation to protect a man who may have manipulated you into a federal conspiracy."

"I am not protecting him," Harper said, her voice growing stronger, clearer, echoing off the high ceiling. She turned her head and looked directly at Vincent, meeting his fathomless gray gaze head-on. "When I met Mr. Romano last night at three in the morning, I was scrubbing grease off a diner counter with fifteen dollars to my name and an eviction notice in my pocket. He didn't trick me. He didn't trap me. I knew exactly what kind of man he was before I signed that license."

Vincent’s breath hitched. A muscle feathered tightly along his jawline.

"Harper, don't," he muttered under his breath, taking a half-step toward her.

"Be quiet, Vincent. You told me the rules of the game, and I agreed to play," she said, her voice cold and resolute. She turned back to the judge. "Yes, he needed a wife to project an image of stability. And I needed a husband with a legal, documented income and a secure home so my little sister wouldn't be stolen by an abusive uncle who wants to cash out her trust fund. It was a transaction. Both of us knew the terms."

Richard sprang to his feet, purple with rage. "She’s admitting it! It’s a sham marriage! Your Honor, she just confessed to perjury!"

"It is not perjury to marry for mutual survival, Mr. Miller," Judge Thomas said sharply, glaring down at Richard. He turned his attention back to Harper, studying her with intense professional curiosity. "Mrs. Romano... do you understand the legal gravity of what you are asserting? If you defend this union, you tie your own legal and financial future to a man facing a federal racketeering indictment."

Harper looked down at the platinum and diamond ring glittering on her left hand. It felt heavy—not just with metal and stones, but with the weight of a completely new life.

She looked back up at the judge, her chin held high.

"I understand," Harper said clearly. "And I also understand that my husband owns a six-bedroom estate with a full-time staff, a stable environment, and the financial resources to give Lily the life she deserves. If the federal government wants to prosecute him, that is their battle. But right now, in this courtroom, we are legally married. And my sister comes home with us."

The gallery erupted into a wall of overlapping shouts and murmurs.

Judge Thomas raised his gavel, slamming it down twice with authoritative finality. "Order! Order in the courtroom!"

He looked at Special Agent Vance, then down at the prosecutor, before finally fixing his gaze on Vincent and Harper.
