Chapter 4 - The Terminal Ambush

The encrypted alert on Maya’s phone screen flashed in bold, crimson text: SECURITY BREACH AT CHICAGO O'HARE VIP HANGAR. PRIVATE SERVER OFFLINE. UNKNOWN INTRUDER ACCESSING SECURE VAULT.

Maya stopped dead in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat. The boardroom meeting in Chicago wasn't just a routine acquisition. It was the final phase of a multi-billion-dollar merger involving proprietary aviation defense tech—technology that her late father had spent his entire life developing, and that someone within her own inner circle was apparently trying to steal right this second.

"Ms. Washington?" David Vance asked, noticing the sudden stiffness in her posture. "Is everything alright?"

"Get this plane moving, Mr. Vance," Maya said, her voice dropping all pretense of casual conversation. It was a command laced with absolute, terrifying urgency. "If we don't push back from this gate in the next two minutes, you won't have an airline left to manage by tonight."

Before David could question her, Maya pushed past him down the aisle toward the first-class exit, her mind racing. The racist pilot, the harassing flight attendant—it was all a distraction. A meticulously orchestrated delay designed to keep her trapped in the air while someone on the ground bypassed her biometric security protocols in Chicago.

"Wait, Ms. Washington! Where are you going?" David called out, scrambling after her. "We need to get airborne!"

"I'm not leaving," Maya said coldly, turning back to face him as she reached the cabin door. "Someone is raiding our primary R&D server in Chicago right now. I need a secure satellite uplink from the cockpit immediately, or I'm grounding this entire flight from my phone."

Marcus Vance stepped out of his seat in row two, grabbing his briefcase. "I'm a tech investor, Ms. Washington. If you've got a server breach, you need an independent witness with clearance to authorize an emergency digital lockdown. I'm coming with you."

Maya sized him up in a fraction of a second, noting the sharp intelligence in his eyes and the firm set of his jaw. "Can you run a secondary firewall bypass?"

"Faster than your IT department," Marcus replied, already unzipping his leather case.

David Vance looked between them, panicking. "You can't just go into the cockpit! That's a federal violation—"

"Shut up, David," Maya snapped, her patience completely exhausted. She turned to the remaining co-pilot, who had just stepped out of the cockpit to see what all the screaming was about. The young co-pilot, a woman named Sarah Jenkins, looked terrified but entirely composed.

"Officer Jenkins," Maya said, locking eyes with her. "Are you certified to fly this bird solo until relief arrives?"

"Yes, ma'am," Sarah answered immediately, her voice steady. "Captain Arrington is stripped of command. Under emergency FAA protocol, as first officer, I assume PIC authority."

"Good," Maya said, stepping past the galley threshold and marching straight toward the cockpit door. "Lock the door behind us. We have an uninvited guest in our Chicago server room, and we're about to lock them in a digital cage."

As Maya slammed the heavy reinforced cockpit door shut and threw the manual deadbolt, her phone rang again. It wasn't security. It was an incoming video call from an unrecognized number originating directly from her private terminal in Chicago.

With a trembling finger, Maya swiped to accept the call. The cockpit's secondary navigation screen flickered, casting a sickly green glow across the instrument panel.

The screen didn't show a security guard. It showed a familiar face sitting comfortably behind Maya’s own executive desk, smiling directly into the camera lens.
