Chapter 7 - Fractured Reflections

"Aunt Beatrice?" Elena breathed the words out, the name slipping from her lips like a foreign incantation she never expected to speak aloud.

The woman—Beatrice—slowly unbuttoned her trench coat, letting it slide off her shoulders onto the floor with a heavy thud. She didn’t look like the ghost stories Elena had grown up with; she looked like reality crashing through a carefully constructed illusion. Her posture was rigidly upright, her silver-streaked hair pulled back into a severe chignon, and her gaze flicked from Elena to Arthur with a cold, predatory assessment.

"You haven't changed a bit, Arthur," Beatrice said, her voice dripping with calculated disdain as she stepped closer to the fire. "Still hiding in the dark, clutching your scotch, pretending you can protect secrets that rusted out twenty years ago."

Arthur finally gripped his tumbler, taking a slow, deliberate sip before setting it down hard enough to crack the ice inside. "We had an agreement, Beatrice. You were supposed to stay across the Atlantic. The trust dissolved the day the court ruled the fire an accident."

"An accident?" Beatrice let out a sharp, joyless laugh that echoed off the high ceilings. "Is that what you told her? Is that the bedtime story you’ve been feeding Elena while she poured her life savings into restoring a foundation built on quicksand?"

Elena stood frozen between them, feeling like a bystander in her own life. The air felt thin, electric with a hostility that had clearly been brewing long before she was old enough to understand what property ownership even meant.

"Stop it! Both of you!" Elena’s voice cracked, raw and commanding. She stepped into the space between the two older figures, her chin held high despite the tremor in her hands. "I am done being managed. I am done being protected by secrets that are rotting this family from the inside out. If you don't tell me right now why my mother’s name was scrubbed from every legal document in this county, I swear to God I will walk out that front door and sign the entire estate over to the state developers by sunrise."

Beatrice stopped in her tracks. For the first time, genuine surprise flickered across her stern features. She looked at Elena with a new intensity, studying the fierce angle of her jaw and the stubborn fire in her eyes.

"You really don't know, do you?" Beatrice whispered, stepping forward and reaching out as if to touch Elena’s cheek, then stopping herself mid-motion. "He didn't just hide your mother's past, Elena. He hid you."

Before Elena could demand an explanation, a sudden, violent thud echoed from the second-floor landing upstairs, followed by the unmistakable sound of breaking glass.

Arthur’s head snapped toward the grand staircase, his face draining of all color. "The archive room," he whispered, horror dawning in his eyes. "Someone is inside the safe."
