Chapter 9 - The Tables Turn

"Federal Division Director Thomas Vance," the lead congressional investigator announced, his voice booming across the polished marble floor. "You are hereby placed under arrest for public corruption, bribery, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to defraud the United States Department of Transportation."
The three corporate vice presidents scrambled backward in their chairs, kicking their coffee cups over as the marshals moved with swift, practiced efficiency. Henderson tried to dive for a leather briefcase resting on the credenza behind him, but Agent Miller intercepted him in two strides, shoving the corporate executive flat against the mahogany surface and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Thomas Vance stood frozen in the center of the room, his hands trembling slightly as two marshals stepped up on either side of him. He looked from the federal agents back to Simone, his professional composure completely shattered.
"You... you planned this," Vance whispered, his voice cracking with disbelief. "The flight, the confrontation with Brenda Miller... it wasn't an accident at all."
"The confrontation on the plane was entirely organic," Simone replied coldly, slipping the encrypted thumb drive back into her pocket. "Brenda Miller was just an arrogant employee behaving like she owned the skies. But your frantic reaction to cover for her? That was all the proof the congressional committee needed to authorize a full-scale RICO investigation into your entire division."
Vance was hauled backward toward the elevators, his protests drowned out by the metallic click of handcuffs and the stern reading of his constitutional rights.
Henderson and the remaining vice presidents were corralled against the far wall, their corporate arrogance replaced by desperate, whimpering silence as federal agents began seizing hard drives, shredding documents, and bagging laptops from the executive desks.
Agent Miller walked back over to Simone, a respectful, almost awestruck expression on his face. "Well, Inspector... I must admit, I had my doubts when we stepped onto that elevator. That was the cleanest takedown I've seen in twenty years of federal service."
"We're not done yet, Agent Miller," Simone said, her amber eyes scanning the remaining paperwork scattered across the boardroom table. "This was just the regional branch. Vance was taking orders from someone higher up the food chain—someone sitting on the parent company's international board in Geneva."
Miller’s eyebrows shot up. "Geneva? Ma'am, that's outside our domestic jurisdiction."
"Not anymore," Simone said, holding up her phone, which was currently syncing with the newly downloaded congressional server files. "The financial trail we just seized includes international wire receipts routed through Swiss banking accounts tied directly to a global logistics cartel. And the primary beneficiary signature on those accounts..."
She paused, scrolling down to the bottom of the encrypted PDF manifest.
