Chapter 9 - The Second Breach

The explosion blew out the emergency lighting grid, plunging the corridor into pitch-black chaos filled with the acrid smell of sulfur and burning insulation.
"Down!" Colonel Brooks yelled, dropping to his knees as chunks of concrete rained down from the ceiling vents.
In the sudden darkness, Olivia didn't hesitate. She threw herself sideways into the recessed doorway of the server room, hitting the floor in a tactical roll and drawing her sidearm as the two MPs swung their rifles blindly toward the source of the blast.
Rat-tat-tat-tat.
The MPs fired a wild burst of suppressive fire into the ceiling smoke, their muzzle flashes illuminating the hallway in erratic strobes of white light.
"Secure the perimeter! Who authorized a breach on this sub-level?" Major General Vance shouted over the din, coughing from the thick gray dust filling the air.
"It's not an internal breach, General!" one of the MPs screamed back, peering down the smoke-filled corridor. "Look at the ventilation shaft!"
A heavy steel grate at the far end of the hallway had been blown clean off its hinges from the outside. Through the gaping rectangular hole, a thick rope dropped down to the concrete floor, followed by the silent, tactical descent of two figures in matte-black tactical gear bearing no military insignia.
They weren't base security. They weren't MPs.
One of them hit the floor in a silent roll, raising an assault rifle equipped with a heavy thermal scope. The second figure stepped out of the smoke, pulling down a tactical visor to reveal sharp, familiar amber-brown eyes.
Simone Sterling.
Olivia blinked through the dust, lowering her pistol by an inch. "Simone? What are you doing here?"
"Airlines were just the front, Olivia," Simone said, her voice cutting cleanly through the smoke as she advanced down the corridor, flanked by her federal security detail. "The real financial pipeline has been running through military logistics supply lines funded by the Pentagon's black-budget transit grants."
Major General Vance scrambled to his feet, his face pale with furious disbelief. "You have no jurisdiction here, Inspector! This is a restricted military installation under active martial command!"
"Jurisdiction?" Simone stopped ten paces away from Vance, a cold, lethal smile touching her lips. She reached into her jacket and pulled out a heavy, crimson-sealed federal warrant signed directly by the Attorney General and the Secretary of Defense. "General Vance, you are currently standing on a federal military base, but every single supply record you've falsified for the last three years was routed through civilian commercial air corridors protected by federal oversight law."
She looked past Vance toward Colonel Brooks, who was slowly rising to his feet, dusting off his uniform trousers.
"And Colonel Brooks," Simone continued, her voice hardening like steel, "your active participation in corporate kickbacks makes you an accessory to federal treason."
Brooks stared at the warrant, his shoulders slumping. The rigid, unyielding posture of the career officer evaporated, leaving behind a broken man who knew the game was finally over.
Vance’s eyes darted toward the side exit, calculating his odds of reaching the motor pool stairs before Simone's team could intercept him.
"Don't even think about it, General," Agent Miller warned, stepping out of the smoke behind Simone with his service weapon leveled directly at Vance's chest.
Before Vance could speak another word, a heavy, rhythmic pounding echoed from the sealed motor pool shutters upstairs, followed by the blaring wail of base emergency sirens cutting through the night.
"They're coming," Olivia said, standing up and brushing the concrete dust off her uniform sleeves. "Hayes and his security detail have breached the upper loading bay."

Simone glanced at Olivia, her expression softening with genuine respect. "Then I suppose it's a good thing we brought backup."
