Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Corridor

Two men in dark overcoats had just stepped off the elevator.

They didn't look like hospital visitors. They moved with a synchronized, heavy grace, their eyes scanning the nursing station, the hallway doors, and the room numbers with cold, surgical precision. One of them had a sharp, jagged scar running down the side of his neck, disappearing beneath the collar of his turtleneck.

Gideon’s instincts, honed by years of ruthless corporate battles and survival in a cutthroat world, flared instantly. He took a half-step back, pulling his coat tighter around himself and slipping the card into his inner pocket.

“Can I help you gentlemen?” the nurse asked nervously, stepping away from the charting desk.

The taller of the two men—the one with the scar—flashed a brief, humorless smile that didn't reach his eyes.

“Just visiting a relative,” the man said smoothly, his voice a gravelly baritone that carried easily down the quiet hall. “Patient in 412. We heard she finally checked in.”

The nurse frowned, looking down at her computer terminal. “Family isn't permitted in ICU after midnight, and visiting hours for Room 412 are strictly restricted. Doctor’s orders.”

The scar-faced man took a slow, deliberate step closer to the nurse’s desk. His partner lingered a few paces back, his hand resting casually inside the deep pocket of his heavy wool coat—a pocket that sagged with the unmistakable weight of a concealed firearm.

“We’re very close family,” the man whispered, his tone dropping into something chillingly polite. “I’m sure the doctor wouldn't mind if we just checked in on her condition.”

Gideon didn't hesitate. He slipped quietly back into Room 412, pulling the heavy wooden door until it clicked softly into its latch, leaving a tiny two-inch gap through which he could watch them.

Inside the dark room, the woman in the coma lay completely still, breathing in mechanical rhythm.

Outside, the nurse’s voice rose slightly, laced with genuine terror. “Sir, I must ask you to step back to the waiting area or I’ll call security—”

Gideon heard the unmistakable metallic slide of a suppressed weapon being unholstered in the hallway.
