Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Machine

The black town car slid silently out of the hospital shadows the second I reached the perimeter fence, its rear door flying open before it had even fully stopped.
I threw myself into the back seat, slamming the door shut with a sharp breath.
“Drive. Now,” I ordered, my voice tight and ragged as I wiped melting snow from my face.
The driver hit the accelerator, pulling smoothly out onto the quiet, snow-slicked boulevard. In the front passenger seat, Marcus, my head of security, turned around, taking in my damp overcoat, mud-stained shoes, and the wild adrenaline burning in my eyes.
“Sir, we tracked two unknown individuals accessing the ICU wing via the service elevators,” Marcus reported, his tone strictly professional, though laced with concern. “Hospital security is locked down, but local police logs show a silent panic alarm triggered in Room 412.”
“They weren't just security threats, Marcus,” I said, pulling the cream-colored invitation card from my inner pocket and tossing it onto the center console. “They were professionals looking for a data drive. A drive belonging to the woman in that room—Norah’s mother.”
Marcus picked up the card with a gloved hand, examining the gold embossing and the alphanumeric code scrawled on the back. “*The Obsidian Circle*? Sir, that’s a private, members-only financial club downtown. Highly restricted. Politicians, corporate executives, and underworld financiers use it to trade influence away from public ledgers.”
“Run that code,” I instructed, leaning back against the leather seat as the city lights blurred past our windows. “Find out what encryption protocol it matches. Because whoever is hunting that little girl is tied directly to whatever her mother uncovered inside that club.”

Marcus’s fingers flew across his encrypted tablet, the screen casting a pale blue glow across his face. After a tense moment of typing, his eyes widened slightly.
“Sir... this code isn't just a membership key,” Marcus said slowly. “It’s an active override sequence for a private corporate vault. And according to the live network ping, it’s broadcasting from an industrial warehouse less than two miles from here.”
