Chapter 3 - The Siege of Chambers

The screech of the door handle being forced from the outside tore through the tense silence of the chambers. Dust motes drifted lazily in the slanting afternoon light pouring through the high barred windows, starkly contrasting with the impending storm outside.
“Judge Carter! I am warning you, you are harboring an active fugitive of the law!” Captain Miller’s voice boomed through the reinforced wood, muffled yet menacing. “If you do not open this door within thirty seconds, we will classify this room as a compromised security zone and breach using tactical protocol!”
Judge Carter didn't even blink. She walked calmly back to her desk, picked up her heavy landline phone, and punched a single extension with absolute, unhurried precision.
“Marshal Vance? This is Judge Carter in Courtroom 3B,” she spoke into the receiver, her voice like cracking ice. “I am declaring an immediate judicial lockdown of my chambers and the adjacent hallway. I have armed municipal officers attempting an illegal, unauthorized breach of a protected judicial sanctuary. Dispatch the federal protective detail and secure the exterior perimeter immediately.”
She slammed the phone down onto its cradle just as a sickening crack split the air.
One of the heavy brass hinges on the outer door sheared clean off under the brute force of a tactical battering ram. The door warped inward, leaving a jagged, splintered gap large enough for a man's arm to slide through.
“Get away from the door, Ms. Brooks!” Judge Carter ordered, drawing a heavy, old-fashioned brass paperweight from her desk as an improvised weapon.
I scrambled backward, knocking my chair against the bookshelves as a gloved hand reached through the splintered opening, fumbling blindly for the interior deadbolt.
Before the hand could find the latch, the heavy metal clatter of boots echoed furiously down the hallway outside, accompanied by shouting voices that weren't wearing precinct blue.
“Federal Marshals! Drop your weapons! Hands where we can see them, now!”
Through the jagged gap in the door, I watched the gloved hand instantly retract. Outside, a chaotic scuffle erupted—shouting, the heavy thud of bodies hitting the marble floor, and the unmistakable metallic click of federal service weapons being unholstered and primed.
Captain Miller’s voice rang out, pitching high with desperate panic. “You can't do this! We have jurisdiction! This is an internal police matter—!”
“Shut your mouth, Captain, or I’ll add obstruction of a federal counter-corruption probe to your charge sheet,” a deep, gravelly voice barked back.
A heavy silence fell over the hallway, broken only by the ragged breathing of the men being subdued on the floor.
Judge Carter let out a slow, controlled breath, loosening her grip on the brass paperweight. She looked at me across the desk, her eyes sharp. “Well, Ms. Brooks it appears your dead-man switch wasn't needed quite yet. But the moment we step out of these doors, the real war begins.”

“I didn't come here to play safe, Your Honor,” I said, zipping my leather briefcase shut. “I came to clean house.”
