Chapter 6 - The Dial Tone of Dread

The electronic click of the disconnected call echoed in the silent chamber like a gavel falling on a death sentence.
I stared at the black screen of my phone, my thumb hovering over the keypad as the blood rushed violently out of my face. Agent Vance and Judge Carter were watching me, their expressions hardening instantly as they registered the shift in my posture.
“Elena? What is it?” Agent Vance demanded, stepping closer, his hand dropping instinctively toward his service belt. “Who was on the line?”
“Sterling,” I whispered, the name catching in my throat like shards of glass. “He just called. He knows about the files, he knows about the courtroom breach, and...” My breath hitched. “And he knows where my parents live.”
Judge Carter’s face drained of color. She rounded her desk in a single, swift motion. “We need to dispatch an immediate federal patrol to that address. If Sterling’s network has been tracking your movements, your parents are sitting ducks.”
“A standard patrol won’t cut it,” Agent Vance barked, already pulling his tactical radio from his vest and punching a priority encryption frequency. “Strike Team Alpha, abort courthouse lockdown detail. We have a code red destination alert. Roll two tactical units north on Interstate 95 immediately—lights and sirens.” He turned back to me, grabbing my shoulder with firm reassurance. “Get your briefcase, Elena. We’re moving now.”
We didn’t wait for the elevators. We took the concrete stairwell down to the subterranean garage in a desperate sprint, our footsteps echoing sharply off the damp walls.
As we burst into the underground parking level, the cool air hit us like a physical blow. But the moment we rounded the corner toward Agent Vance’s unmarked federal SUV, my stomach plummeted into an abyss.
Driver-side window smashed out into a spiderweb of jagged glass. The dashboard electronics completely stripped bare, wiring hanging like exposed entrails. And spray-painted in dripping crimson paint across the vehicle's hood was a single, mocking letter:
May you like
